'Kandy still has numerous guest houses run by families where you can have your bed and breakfast among wedding photos of children long-gone. The Mahaweli Reach began this way in the 1970’s when owner Atul Panabokke and his family began a four room guest house where they personally cared for visitors. Over time, the building doubled and redoubled to 23, 50, and finally 114 rooms….to the visitors walking in, nothing belies its humble beginnings because the Mahaweli appears every bit a venerable 5-star institution….today the hotel is still run by the Panabokke sons, with the mother as chairperson…'
