Kurulubedda is a nature lover's dream. After checking in at the Lighthouse Hotel, guests are taken by boat along the Mahamodara River, which is lined with mangroves and marshy areas inhabited by numerous birds and monitor lizards with the occasional purple-faced leaf monkey peering out from the branches. Soon the pier becomes visible where a long wooden bridge over paddy fields and a lotus-filled pond takes you to Kurulubedda's six luxurious dwellings. Submerged in foliage, with branches that reach inwards, the cottages have a feel of a tree house, but with all modern conveniences. The peaceful surroundings, with sounds of bird call and crickets at night, makes this an ideal getaway for four persons travelling together or even a romantic honeymoon.
The six dwellings at Kurulubedda are furnished with a double bed fitted with mosquito netting, and has satellite TV, telephone, and coffee / tea making facilities. The bathroom has h/w shower, twin wash basins and w/c as well as cotton bath robes, slippers and umbrella. The covered timber deck, with a recliner, floor cushions and sitting area is ideal for lounging and taking in the sounds of nature. While two dwellings have a plunge pool of its own, the remaining four dwellings share a common pool.
Kurulubedda's restaurant overlooks the pond and paddy fields. Candlelit dinners can also be served in your own cottage. Delicious Sri Lankan and Western dishes are prepared using fresh fruit and vegetables straight from Kurulubedda's own organic home garden. Seafood and meats are purchased from the local market. Staff includes a chef, housekeeper, and nightwatchman. The manager and naturalist from the Lighthouse Hotel are on hand if required. Guests can use all facilities at the Lighthouse hotel.
Kurulubedda, the Lighthouse Hotel's new eco retreat, is set amidst mangroves and paddy fields just a 15-minute boat ride from the hotel. The drive from Colombo to Galle averages three-and-a-half hours - or take the Air Taxi from the airport and fly to Koggala, which is a 20-minute drive to Lighthouse Hotel. If you are then heading into the hills, we offer competitive rates on a sea plane service between Koggala and Hatton.
