Hill Country Cycle Hop
Introduction
The Hill country is best suited for mountain biking with its lush tea estates which are criss-crossed by dirt tracks which link the old colonial plantations and hill stations. There are many steep hill and mountain climbs involved on this tour and it requires riders to be in very good physical condition. Starting in Kandy, this cycle tour takes you through to Nuwara Eliya in the central hills, the Hortain Plains - an undulating 2000m high plateau 28km south of Nuwara Eliya and finally, ends up in Kitulgala in the south central region. Cycling into the highlands from Kandy you will experience Sri Lanka at its most dramatic: a land of gurgling mountain streams and steep hillsides cloaked in luminous green tea, sweet-scented Cyprus and Eucalyptus trees.

Sri Lanka Tours Day 1Upon arriving in Sri Lanka, transfer directly to Kandy where you will stay overnight at the Chaaya Citadel located at the edge of the Mahaweli River. Rest and relax after your long flight. In the evening, we recommend a visit to the Temple of the Tooth where a sacred tooth relic of the Lord Buddha is enshrined since 4th Century A.D. The temple has decorative walls, a golden roof and fine woodwork. Religious services (pooja) with traditional music and drumming are held daily at dawn, mid-day and in the evening where guests can participate.
Sri Lanka Accomodation Chaaya Citadel
Chaaya Citadel offers luxurious accommodation with scenic views. This reliable 3/4-star hotel has been rebranded and refurbished, and provides tranquil surroundings away from the busy city of Kandy. Days begin to birdsong and perhaps a warm mist rolling away from the river. The riverside setting also adds lustre to the twilight hours. ...(More)
Sri Lanka Tours Day 2The cycling tours commences today from Kandy through the spectacular Hantane Forest area and onward to region of Pusselawa. Stay overnight at the Lavendar House set on a tea estate in Pusselawa. After resting, explore the surrounding Helboda Tea estate and tea factory where you will gain insight into the manufacturing process as well as an opportunity to taste the different grades of hill country tea.
Sri Lanka Accomodation Lavender House
Built in the 1890’s, The Lavender House is an old Colonial planter’s bungalow surrounded by the lush green tea estate of Helboda. The bungalow has been carefully restored blending old world charm with luxurious comfort, peace and tranquility. There are five en suite bedrooms in all and the outdoors offers extensive landscaped gardens, clay tennis courts and an infinity pool with picturesque views of the surrounding tea plantation. We recommend Lavender House for families as the bungalow, situated in 7 acres of gardens, offers plenty of attractions to keep children entertained for hours on end. ...(More)
Sri Lanka Tours Day 3Ride on to Nuwara Eliya. Few, if any, small islands have as much geographical diversity and Sri Lanka’s tea-growing hills offer breathtaking landscapes. Cycling into the highlands from Kandy you will Sri Lanka at its most dramatic: a land of gurgling mountain streams and steep hillsides cloaked in luminous green tea, sweet-scented Cyprus and Eucalyptus trees. Nuwara Eliya, nestled at the foot of a mountain, was made into a summer retreat by the British in the early 1800s and much of its colonial character still remains. Check into St. Andrews hotel where you will rest overnight.
Sri Lanka Accomodation St Andrews Hotel
St Andrew's Hotel is perched above Nuwara Eliya town centre adjoining the picturesque golf course. This stately Tudor-style colonial mansion, built in the latter part of the 19th century, is our recommendation in Nuwara Eliya. Standing alongside imposing pine trees, it has a stern exterior, but inside is a world of open fires and candlelit dinners. ...(More)
Sri Lanka Tours Day 4 & 5The wild expanse of Horton Plains National Park, more than 7,000 feet above sea level, offers a memorable start to the following day. Cycle to the 'World's End' and "Little World's End" offering one of the finest views in Sri Lanka. With a mixture of grasslands and forests, including the last montane forest in the country, Horton Plains have a healthy variety of birds to watch. Just 20 kilometres from Nuwara Eliya, the park offers the chance to observe five endemic bird species that can be seen only at this altitude. Mammals include plenty of Sambar, the Slender Loris, Bear Monkey and, occasionally, a Leopard. This is the only National Park in Sri Lanka where visitors are allowed to roam around freely inside. The cycling journey finally ends in Kitulagala situated in the western foothills of the central highlands. You will stay two nights at the Plantation Hotel perched right on the banks of the Kelani River. Kitulgala is an area with tropical rainforests, winding rivers and an undulating terrain and owes its popularity to the Kelani River which offers exciting rapids for rafting. This stretch of the River Kelani offers grade 3/4 rapids, and is therefore great for beginners and experienced rafters alike. The calm sections of the river meander through jungle-clad mountains, low country tea and rubber plantations.
Sri Lanka Accomodation Plantation Hotel
Once a plantation bungalow set on a two acre estate, the Plantation Hotel’s prime appeal is its location, right on the banks of the Kelani River and surrounded by tropical jungle. Go river rafting or visit the location famously used for the film ‘A Bridge over the River Kwai’. The hotel has eight rooms and a riverside restaurant. ...(More)
Sri Lanka Tours Day 6 & 7After an adventurous cycling journey, today you head to the North West coastal town of Negombo for two nights rest and relaxation on the beach. We recommend Brown’s Beach hotel situated just half and hour from the international airport. Explore Negombo’s quaint fishing villages or join a fisherman on his catamaran as it sets sail into the sunset. You may like to take a boat ride along the old Dutch canals that criss-cross the local area, or experience Negombo's Colonial heritage including Catholic churches and the ruins of the Dutch Fort.
Sri Lanka Accomodation Browns Beach
Perched at the edge of an idyllic stretch of private beach in the heart of Negombo, is Browns Beach, a mid-range large hotel with very much of a homely feel that guests eagerly return to time and again. Red Dot recommends the Beach Rooms which have direct access to the beach and is a delight following refurbishments. ...(More)
