Kandy is the capital of Sri Lanka's hill country with a rich cultural heritage, and where the tropical heat of the coast is exchanged for the verdant cool of lush mountain slopes. Thilanka Hotel is situated in the foothills of Udawattakelle nature reserve, close to the town centre, with most rooms offering a picturesque view of Kandy Lake.
Introduction
This three-star hotel began life as a private house, built by a wealthy Kandyan towards the end of the colonial era. It has now been enhanced by a six-storey new wing, with rooms that are an interesting blend of Kandyan heritage and minimalist décor. Although situated in town, Thilanka has a sense of being one with nature since the Udawattakelle nature reserve is right behind with many birds and monkeys finding their way into the hotel's gardens. The Sri Lankan's owners of Thilanka have also branched out into the Cultural Triangle area with the opening of their new mid-market property - Thilanka Resort & Spa in Dambulla.

Accommodation
Thilanka comprises of 87 rooms - Deluxe, Standard and Suites. Red Dot recommends the 30 Deluxe rooms and suites in the New Wing. These rooms have a/c and tasteful interiors with a blend of traditional Kandyan colours of oranges, reds and yellows and modern minimalism. Kandyan art, tapestries, brass oil lamps and antique statutes adorns the rooms. Other in-room facilities in these rooms include satellite TV, mini-bar and attached bathrooms with h/w shower.

Excursions
Thilanka organizes bird watching and nature treks into the Udawattekelle nature reserve located just behind the hotel. The city of Kandy is steeped in history and culture. Interesting activities include: a visit to the Temple of the Tooth where a sacred tooth relic of the Lord Buddha is enshrined; Peradeniya Botanical gardens, with its orchid collection and formally laid-out trees; Kandy's rich ancient arts and crafts including drum making, Dumbara mat weaving and Kandyan dancing and drumming
