  • Day 5, 6 & 7

Time to leave the cool highlands and twist your way down to the south coast. You have the option of spending the next three nights on the Galle coast or in Bentota on the South West coast. In Galle, discover the 17C Dutch Fort, a UNESCO-protected World Heritage site and a melting pot of cultural influences. Several hours can be spent wandering along the maze of narrow streets, the old lighthouse, high ramparts, Dutch period churches, museums, shops, restaurants and cafes. High on the headland of Unawatuna Bay is Rhumassala Temple. With beautiful views stretching out over the Indian Ocean a walk around the headland near the temple is very special. Famed for the natural medicinal herbs nearby you will walk through hidden villages and verdant jungle valleys eventually finding yourself on "Jungle Beach"- a little known and secluded beach. Scuba diving is immensely rewarding in Sri Lanka and around Galle there are some of the country's best dive spots, run by official PADI centres. Spotting bright corals and exotic fish is easy and there is the opportunity to go both cave diving and wreck diving.

Numerous watersports are also on offer at Bentota lagoon including surfing, snorkelling, and jet skiing. Go out to sea in a catamaran with the fisherman or take a boat ride along the tranquil Madu River past quaint rural villages, en route, visit the local markets, temples & craft and antique shops. Experience Ambalangoda’s cultural heritage with a visit to the Ariyapala Mask Museum where intricate masks used in various southern traditional dance forms are on display. Masked dancing is also performed here regularly.

If you choose to stay in Galle, we have provided the option of staying at the Galle Fort Hotel situated within the walls of the Dutch Fort or at Kahanda Kanda, a luxurious boutique hotel situated inland amidst a rural village setting. In Bentota, we would recommend staying at Villa Bentota.
