Sri Lanka Tours Day 3 & 4Journey to the north central town of Anuradhapura – Sri Lanka’s first capital which was the greatest monastic city of the ancient world. Anuradhapura was a royal capital for more than 100 Sri Lankan kings, and was also home to thousands of monks from dozens of monasteries. Originally founded in the 4C BC, it became the capital of Sri Lanka two centuries later. Anuradhapura is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Explore Anuradhapura’s magnificent ruins and temples including the ruins of Mahavihara - the first Monastery, which served as the seat of Theravada Buddhism; Thuparamaya and Ruwanwelisaya. The ancient Bo Tree, which was originally a branch of the Bo tree in Budda Gaya under which Lord Buddha attained enlightenment and brought to Sri Lanka by Emperor Asoka’s daughter, Princess Sangamiita, also is in Anuradhapura. Sri Lanka Tours Day 5 - 10Travel east to the coastal town of Trincomalee for your six day beach stay at Chaaya Blu which fronts the white sandy beaches of Uppuveli. Take a boat ride to Pigeon Island, a breeding site for Blue Rock Pigeon and ideal location for half-day snorkeling excursions. The waters around Trincomalee are also famous for whale and dolphin watching. Explore Trincomalee town with a deep rooted history. Visit Fort Frederick, first used by the Portuguese in 1624, followed by the Dutch and later by the British. At the northern tip of Fort Frederick is a cliff known as “Swami Rock” which drops around 360 feet (110 meters) directly into the sea below. On its top most pinnacle is the Tirukonesvaram Hindu Kovil. Colourful “Poojas” or religious services are conducted here at dusk. The view of the natural harbour and the Indian Ocean is breathtaking from this location.
