Situated on a mountain ridge with breathtaking views of the Ella Gap, Grand Ella Motel is a 14-room property with a homely feel. Conveniently located off the main Badulla - Colombo or Wellawaya Road, Grand Ella Motel is a favourite lunch or tea stop for most travellers. The town of Bandarawela is just half and hour away and Haputale is one hour's drive. The Ella train station is located nearby.
Introduction
Grand Ella Motel run by the Ceylon Hotels Corporation, is located high above a valley complete with soaring peaks, gushing waterfalls and boulder-strewn tea plantations , and has the feel and size of a high-class guesthouse. Hours can be spent in the gardens or your own private terrace absorbing the magical panorama of the Ella Gap. You can even spot the red carriages of the Colombo-bound train at a distance as it winds around the mountains and disappears into the tunnel.

Accommodation
Out of the 14 rooms, Red Dot recommends the ten Superior Rooms with en suite bathrooms that have been recently refurbished to a good standard and far better than a typical guesthouse. These a/c rooms are comfortable and have double beds fitted with mosquito netting, overhead ceiling fans, TV, phone and minibar. All rooms open out to a private balcony with the Ravana and Sanhitha rooms sharing a large private terrace shaded by tall leafy trees and overlooking the magnificent Ella Gap. A romantic candlelit dinner is served on the terrace upon request. The bathrooms have h/w showers, wash basin and w/c.
Facilities
The restaurant opens out onto an extensive garden terrace where a la carte and buffet meals are served with menus consisting of both western and Sri Lankan dishes. The garden terrace with expansive views is an ideal spot to while away your time by day or at dusk with a cup of tea, fresh juices or a cocktail served from the kiosk or the garden bar. The Hotel lobby is WiFi connected. The Manager and his staff are extremely helpful.
Excursions
Trek to the magnificent Ravana Ella situated at the edge of a forest reserve with several ancient caves. Nature lovers will enjoy a visit to the Tangamale Bird Sanctuary home to many of the islands endemic, resident and migrant birds, especially the highland species. Adisham, a Benedictine Monastery, and several other waterfalls including Dunhinda and Diyaluma are all located nearby in Ella, Bandarawela, and Haputale.
