'As I gazed over the tiled rooftops of Galle Fort towards the white pillar-box lighthouse, whilst seated at a traditional school desk, I guessed that this must have been a similar past-time for the headmasters that came and went when this 18th century mansion was a school…Today, the fabulous façade of the large yellow building – once also a printing press…has given up housing pupils and reams of paper to accommodate discerning guests…..After a contemplative walk up the re-hued western end of Pedlar Street to watch the sun decent over the ramparts, my partner and I returned in darkness to find the villa seductively lit and the little courtyard garden bathed in candlelight. Over a long dinner, we enjoyed prawn samosas, tuna carpacio and vegetable-infused couscous. Good quality house wine complimented the meal, finished off with a particularly delicious chilled chocolate cake and vanilla ice cream – home made of course'
