The Flower Garden is a homely guest house located in Unawatuna - the hip beach hang-out on the south-coast of Sri Lanka. Though not directly on the beach, the Flower Garden is only a five-minute stroll from the beautiful Unawatuna bay. Also nearby (a 15 minute trishaw ride) is the historic Galle Fort. The journey from Colombo’s International Airport will take approximately four-and-a-quarter hours.
Introduction
Set amidst flowering gardens, this charming guest house has comfortable a/c rooms, a small poolside restaurant serving good food and friendly staff that adds to the relaxed ambience. The Sri Lankan owner, Sassi, ensures that guests are well taken care of. Flower Garden has several repeat guests who even have their names inscribed on each of the individual cabanas. Some may be put off by a lack of beach front, but the pool (the largest in Unawatuna) provides an excellent alternative to the occasionally busy beach. The hotel is set out in three loose sections: restaurant and pool area, a row of chalet-style cabanas and an area containing family rooms.

Accommodation
Rooms are comfortable and pleasant; staying in one of the excellent cabanas is recommended. Rooms have fans and mosquito nets and are quite spacious. The cabanas come with their own small patch of garden and a couple of deckchairs to kick back into.
Facilities
The Flower Garden will delight you with excellent Sri Lankan cuisine as well as a few western dishes in its restaurant and rejuvenate you with a wallow in their large pool. There is a bar serving a range of alcoholic beverages and fresh juices. The in-house cyber café has internet, IDD telephone, fax and photocopying facilities. Unawatuna itself has plenty of things to do if you can drag yourself away from a game of Karom in a friendly beach bar. Safe swimming is possible just 5 minutes away in Unawatuna’s beautiful bay. Several water sports are on offer including deep-sea fishing, catamaran and boat rides, surfing, and snorkelling.
Excursions
High on the headland of Unawatuna Bay is Rhumassala Temple. With beautiful views stretching out over the Indian Ocean, a walk around the headland near the temple is very special. Famed for the natural medicinal herbs nearby you will walk through hidden villages and verdant jungle valleys eventually finding yourself on `Jungle Beach’ - a little known and secluded beach. Galle’s historic 17th century Dutch Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site is just 15 minutes away. Hours can be spent exploring the maze of narrow streets lined with Dutch and British period buildings still in use, the sturdy ramparts looking out to sea, the growing collection of art galleries, antique shops, cafes and restaurants.
