Lonely Planet , Jan 2009
'Commanding its location with elegance and gravitas, the stone-clad Hill Club is the most profound evidence of Nuwara Eliya’s colonial past. Up to 1970 it was reserved for British males, and one of its bars remained resolutely `men only’ until a few years ago. It’s now open to Sri Lankans and women, and members retain reciprocal rights with London clubs. Tennis courts are available to guests and non guests, and the lawns and gardens are immaculate. The suites are spacious and charming, but the regular rooms are small and have substandard furnishings given the price. .…..dinner at the Hill Club is a thoroughly retro and unique experience.'
Channa Daswatte, Sri Lanka – Tropical Design & Architecture, 2006, pp 60
'The present Hill Cub building dates from the 1930s when it was built by the British, Colombo-based firm of Edwards, Reid and Beg in a Scottish baronial style in local dressed granite. Its imposing presence is enhanced by its location on a hill overlooking the golf course and its own expansive lawns….the interior of the Hill Club is an eclectic mixture of practical furnishings surviving from the different periods of its existence, together with the trappings associated with the British hill station lifestyle: fireplaces, mounted hunting trophies, framed portraits and scenes and vases of temperate flowers'
Customer Feedback
Dec 18, 2008 : This is not a five star hotel but for what it is it is very good and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay
---JB – Dorset
Aug 05, 2008 : A unique experience. Great staff - rooms out of the 50's, reminded me a bit of the old days of club rooms in London. But the atmosphere is quite unique. And how nice to have to dress smartly for dinner - excellent food - proper service - the log fire - etc.
--- JH - East Sussex
Aug 14, 2007 : An indescribable experience -- back 50 years! Excellent value for money and impeccable service. The golf course was a treat -- profesional coaching for less than GBP£5.
--- DW - Worcester
Mar 18, 2007 : Service was excellent: old-fashioned attention that you don;t often get these days
--- KC - London
Feb 25, 2007 : A step back in time -- great atmosphere. Tea Factory: Beautiful views but it was up a terrible road, full of potholes
--- HT – Cambridge
