Birds of Sri Lanka
Snapshot
Sri Lanka is a birder's delight. Its tropical climate and relative isolation is responsible for the amazingly diverse bird life that attracts more than 400 species. Almost 200 migrant species descend on the country having flown south for the winter. Some, like the sandpipers and plovers, come from as far north as the arctic tundra. Within a two-week trip you can easily see all 33 endemic birds along with at least 200 species. Whether bird watching is your passion, or you merely fancy a dabble, pick up a pair of binoculars, a guidebook and a notepad and join us in this birdwatcher’s paradise.

Birds of Sri Lanka
It is the range of attractions that makes Sri Lanka a serious bird watcher’s paradise and the beauty of the country and tropical climate also makes it a perfect place for a novice to begin. The best times to visit are from October to April, when the migrant birds have landed. The weather is best in February and March. Watch as the Storks, spoonbills, cormorants and kingfishers feed off the tanks in the dry regions and flamingos come in their hundreds to Bundala National Park.

Birding Accommodation
Martin’s Lodge: Martin’s Lodge used to be the only accommodation close to the park entrance, a timeless small guesthouse cut off from the rest of the world. Martin, a charming and eccentric host, is so far behind the rest of the world that reservation requests are still collected during his weekly visit to the post office. The 10-roomed property is very basic. But the hospitality and stunning location both amply make up for the lack of luxury. Martin is also and expert on the forest and will talk freely about a place that he clearly loves deeply. The guesthouse is regularly visited by naturalists, ornithologists and university students who come there for research and exploration. (More)

Rainforest Edge: Rainforest Edge offers rustic style, high above the beautiful rolling hills of Waddagala and the Sinharaja forest reserve. The northern entrance to the Sinharaja rain forest is just 10 minutes drive away. This is an isolated, pollution-free environment without discomforts. From this appealing property - a triumph of designer-rustic, you can gaze upon rolling tea plantations, studded with occasional tea bungalows and factories, some now disused, some still in operation. Here you have the chance to enjoy the hospitality of Sinharaja villagers in a beautiful natural setting. Rainforest Edge follows strict environmentally friendly policies of using organic methods of farming, recycling of water and waste materials, and the use of solar energy. (More)

Boulder Gardens: Boulder Gardens is a remarkable eco-boutique hotel, located 30 minutes from the entrance to Sinharaja rainforest in south-west Sri Lanka. It took three years to build Boulder Garden from local stone preserving the surrounding natural environment and providing employment to the villagers. The end result is unexpected luxury and a deep commitment to its natural environment. Here, winding steps will take you around trees with long roots, rock pools where you least expect it and flowing water. You will feel that you are enclosed in the depths of an ancient rain forest, where monkeys and wild squirrels may make malarkey in the trees, an occasional jackal may prowl and eagles and hornbills are regularly seen. (More)

Kulu Safaris: Kulu Safaris are a high-end wildlife company that specialises in mobile luxury camping safaris inside the three major national parks in Sri Lanka - Uda Walawe, Wilpattu and Yala. Kulu offers a wonderful experience that allows you to really savour and enjoy the remarkable beauty of Sri Lanka’s wilderness. (More)
