"'It’s hard to find fault with this superb hotel. Rooms, with high wooden ceilings, languidly rotating fans, hardwood furnishings and modern bathrooms, have lots of colonial style and views over the gorgeous pool, which in turn has views over the gorgeous rice fields and duck-filled ponds. The restaurant is equally classy, with Western and Asian dishes.'"

Priyankara, a three star hotel, lies in the deep south, close to the south coast's collection of sandy coves and well placed to explore Tissa's ancient cultural heritage as well as the jungle shrine of Kataragama, and the Yala National Park. The serene and tranquil town of Tissamaharama was the capital of the ancient Ruhunu Kingdom in the 2nd century B.C. Tissa, named after King Kavantissa, is dominated by lakes and gigantic semi-circle shaped Buddhist Dagobas (temples). Tissamaharama is enroute from the Southern Highlands to the South Coast. The fortress town of Galle lies about two-and-a-half hours to the west.
Introduction
Wildlife enthusiasts will be particularly taken by Priyankara, which has a restful location close to the Tissmaharama tank. From your private balcony, relax on colonial-style cane chairs and watch an array of birds in the nearby rice fields, as well as the timeless rituals of paddy farming. Excursions
Tissa's ancient reservoirs - Tissa weva and the Debara Wewa attract many species of water birds including cormorant, purple heron, Caspian tern and the painted stork. Several ancient Buddhist temples including the Maha Stupa, Sandagiri dagoba and monastery complex, Yatala and the Menik dagobas are all located nearby as well as an archeological Museum that provides a glimpse into the ancient Ruhunu kingdom. The sacred jungle shrine of Kataragama, a pilgrimage site that has great religious and historical significance, is also located nearby. Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims and Christians throng to this sacred jungle shrine, built by the warrior King Dutugemunu in the 2nd century B.C. to pay homage to God Kataragama. Each day at specific times, the shrines come alive when poojas (devotions) are presented to the Gods. The baskets filled with fruit and flowers, the aromas from burning incense and oil lamps, the sounds of dashing coconuts, clanging bells and continuous chanting all combine to provide a mesmerizing experience.
