Tree Tops Jungle Lodge Sri Lanka

Tree Tops Jungle Lodge, Buttala
Location
Tree Tops Jungle Lodge is set in the southern tropical dry zone, a terrain of rocky hills, scrub jungle and lakes, north-west of Yala Game Park. At Tree Tops you will live a natural life, devoid of many luxuries that the west takes for granted. The Weliara wilderness is sparsely populated - the nearest shop is 15kms and the south-coast beaches are 50kms distant -- and visitors are even advised to arrive by mid-afternoon to avoid meeting an elephant on the way. Allow yourself at least two days here to give yourself an opportunity to adjust to a harmonious yet simple way of life. Tree Tops Jungle Lodge is seriously committed to eco-tourism and protecting the birds, animals and habitats that make this part of Sri Lanka so special.
Introduction
Committed outdoor types might relish this taste of Sri Lanka stripped to basics. The more fearful or pampered are advised to try elsewhere. This is Sri Lanka in the raw. Guests can sample tranquil nets replete with animal and bird sounds. The nights are black, but watchmen are on patrol. Sleep in a tree hut or even outside under the stars on a camp bed. Drink and bathe primitively (a bucket is provided) with jungle water from an outdoor well, communal dining is in a rudimentary main hut, to the sound of birdlife and perhaps even the sight of wild elephants on the lightest nights, especially between June-October. Tree Tops lies on the edge of a small ancient forest, complete with protected ebony trees, some 400 years old. There is no electricity and, if you are unlucky enough to catch a rare storm, it can get rather muddy. Tree Tops suits only those adults with a desire to experience a natural, uncosseted existence and is not recommended for children under 12.

Accommodation
Is in the form of simple thatched tree huts and clay huts that blends in with the surrounding wilderness. Trees are never cut down for the purposes of building infra-structure here. The huts are made of fallen trees and branches.
Facilities
The facilities might be deliberately basic, but the staff is eager to help you adjust to a simple way of living. Traditional Sri Lankan curries are prepared over an open fire and water buffalo yogurt, produced by the owner of a local herd, is a special delicacy. Staff acts as guides in country treks. This is not an organised safari - if you want that, try Yala or Uda Walawe. Tree Tops offers something more random. Mosquito nets are provided but you might consider taking a powerful torch, insect repellent, strong boots, a water bottle, ample cash - you will not find many outlets for your card - and try to remember those outdoor pursuit lessons.
Excursions

can include bird watching and nature walks, a trek up the Hill of Enlightenment, visits to ancient Buddhist temples and monuments (perhaps by bullock cart), a visit to a forest-monk retreat, or to the shrine of Kataragama. Visit the ancient Maligawila and Buduruvagala rock sculptures of located nearby.

Note: Tree Tops suits only those adults with a desire to experience a natural, uncosseted existence and is not recommended for children under 12.
