Location
Mandara Rosen is a 'four-star' hotel situated in shady, tranquil gardens at the foot of a range of hills, in the sacred town of Kataragama in the extreme south-east of Sri Lanka. Located 260 km from Colombo, Kataragama is enroute from the southern highlands to the south coast. It can also be approached along the south coast via Galle. Mandara Rosen is an ideal base from which to explore the ancient southern cultural heritage of Kataragama and Tissamaharama as well as the game park at Yala and Bundala nature reserve.
Introduction
There is much to experience in the south of Sri Lanka where the history of the ancient Ruhunu Kingdom dates back to the 2nd century B.C. The south is also blessed with an abundance of wilderness and beautiful sunkissed beaches. Mandara Rosen meets the need for a comfortable and well-equipped hotel in this region. Its bright and airy rooms and modern facilities include a large swimming pool.

Mandara Rosen is a bright, airy hotel, with 52 a/c rooms including two Suites and four family clusters. The standard double rooms are approximately 400 sq ft and are well-furnished with twin or double beds, satellite TV with in-house movies, minibar, electronic safety lockers, tea/coffee making facilities and attached bathrooms with h/w showers. Large windows and a predominance of white and terracotta encourage a fresh, cheerful atmosphere.
Facilities
The swimming pool, with a children's section, is claimed as the largest in the region, with a novel underwater music system. Petal restaurant, offers Sri Lankan and international cuisine in a relaxed atmosphere, as well as vegetarian specialties and bar with pool table. Other facilities include fax, internet, and conference room with secretarial facilities, gymnasium, table tennis, badminton, and board games.
Excursions
The sacred jungle shrine of Kataragama, a pilgrimage site that has great religious and historical significance, is located just five minutes away. Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims and Christians throng to this sacred jungle shrine, built by the warrior King Dutugemunu in the 2nd century B.C. to pay homage to God Kataragama. Each day at specific times, the shrines come alive when poojas (devotions) are presented to the Gods. The baskets filled with fruit and flowers, the aroma from burning incense and oil lamps, the sounds of dashing coconuts, clanging bells and continuous chanting combine to provide a mesmerizing experience. Tissamaharama's ancient reservoirs attract many species of water birds including cormorant, purple heron, Caspian tern and the painted stork. Several ancient Buddhist temples are nearby as well as an archeological Museum that provides a glimpse into the ancient Ruhunu kingdom. Wildlife enthusiasts can venture out to the Yala National Park and Bundala bird sanctuary.
