"'....Prepare to step back in time; at the far end a waterfalls spills into a gorge, down-river is a natural spa. Explore the 60 acres of Healing Garden and discover lotus ponds, healing pavilions, meditation pavilions, and the Galapita Lake. The food is organic, cooked Sri Lankan style; electricity is only now coming to this part of the country….you could also take a tyre-tube ride down the river to the village of Demodera, two hours away. Galapita is a rudimentary, and for many a thoroughly uplifting eco retreat situated near the pilgrimage site of Kataragama, and well placed for the Yala Game Park in Sri Lanka's south-east. What began as an idealistic rural retreat for friends and family is now an escapist experience for a select bunch of independent travellers. Galapita can be accessed via Ratnapura, from Ella in the southern highlands or along the south coast.
Introduction
Life can hardly be more natural than this. Across Galapita Bridge, your world may change. Perched on the banks of the Gem River, Galapita is one of the island's best hideaways, a property blessed with a stunningly beautiful location and a relaxed atmosphere. If you need to unwind and recharge away from the stresses of the modern world, then this is the place for you. Hardier families, attuned to an outdoor life, will also relish Galapita because the surrounding countryside will keep children enthralled. However, children aged under eight should be carefully supervised because of the river.

Accommodation
Your bedroom will be one of four huts perched on the rocks by the river or it might be the Tree House that peers over paddy fields. It will have a straw roof, bamboo walls, a futon bed, mosquito nets and a little driftwood furniture, nothing much else. The bedrooms are open and natural, furnished with comfy mattresses and bed linen and cooled by the night breeze. A washing area for each hut possesses flushing toilets and showers.
Facilities
Galapita uses solar power. Only vegetarian food is offered here, but the rice and curries are mouthwateringly good. Food is predominantly Sri Lankan made with the freshest ingredients, perhaps picked from the garden or fished in the river. The Galapita Healing Garden Mineral Spa provides relaxing Ayurveda therapies that rejuvenate the mind and body. Located on the banks of the Menik Ganga, with the soothing sounds of flowing water, the simple Mineral Spa is perfect for those seeking relaxation. The medicinal herbs used for the therapies are all from Galapita’s own herbal gardens and the surrounding forests. Daily yoga sessions are conducted at the Yoga Sala surrounded by natural lotus filled ponds.
Excursions
Jungle treks, bird watching, elephant watching, cycling, river bathing, tyre tubing (sailing downstream wedged in a tyre), are all adventurous activities for kids and adults a like. A host of cultural and religious sites, including Kataragama, a sacred pilgrimage site visited by people of different faiths, are all nearby. For wildlife enthusiasts, the Yala Game Park can be accessed from here. Yala covering nearly 400 sq. miles of wilderness is home to herds of elephants, sloth bear, crocodiles, wild boar, wild buffalo, peacocks, jackals, monkeys, porcupines, leopards, deer, and numerous species of birds.
