Dunvila cottage is situated on a 12-acre property in the north central province overlooking the Dunvila Lake and Wasgomuwa National Park, its boundaries just 500 metres away from the cottage. This rustic eco lodge is an ideal base for exploring the surrounding untouched wilderness. Wasgomuwa National Park is lightly visited, which can add to its escapist appeal. Red Dot will advise about any security concerns you may have but the park is currently safe for visitors. It can be accessed from the districts of Matale or Polonnaruwa.
Introduction
For nature lovers, the Dunvila Cottage is an ideal eco retreat that overlooks a serene lotus filled lake, lush green paddy fields, and undisturbed wilderness. The cottage is surrounded on three sides by the Dunvila Lake and has magnificent views of the Wasgomuva jungles and the Knuckles and Sudu Kandha Ranges. Over 150 species of birds have been recorded in the area including the rare spot-bellied eagle owl, blue-eared kingfisher and the red-winged cuckoo. Numerous elephants can also be spotted at a distance from across the lake, in the Wasgomuva National Park.

This two storey rustic open sided cottage with clay floors and roof thatched with Illuk grass is designed to take in the breathtaking views from various angles. The ground floor consists of a lounging area on a raised clay platform which can also sleep 4 adults at night and a separate bedroom with a double bed fitted with mosquito netting. There is a bathroom with w/c and open air bathtub and a natural shower, from which fresh well water cascades down in abundance. A separate outdoor shower located in the garden under the trees, gives a more natural feel. A narrow stairway leads to the second small sleeping area with open sides which are furnished with two rustic single beds. This area looks directly into the Dunvila Lake and the Wasgomuva Park beyond. The dining area consists of a solid table top and rustic benches. Delicious Sri Lankan rice and curry is prepared over a traditional hearth in the simple kitchen using clay pots. Guests can also dine in the verandah under the shade of a Tamarind tree or watch the sunset over the lake while sipping a cup of tea. The basic lighting for the cottage is supplied by solar energy. Several oil lamps and candles are also lit providing adequate lighting at night. In keeping with the escapist feel, there is no fridge or television at the cottage. A book case filled with titles on Sri Lankan wildlife and heritage provides guests with valuable information about the surrounding area.
