"'Combines a modern design with a languid, colonial ambience. The standard lakeside rooms are actually better value and more spacious than the deluxe rooms in the main building. If you’re lucky you’ll see water buffalo bathing in the lake. Rooms have (slightly noisy) air-con and a limited range of English-language satellite TV channels. There is a good restaurant, but weekend entertainment may include a couple of guys in straw hats playing mediocre versions of Boney M songs you’re trying to forget.'"

Location
The Centauria Hotel lies on the edge Chandrika reservoir, close to the small town of Embilipitiya, and just south of the Uda Walawe national park. From here it is a shortish drive to the tranquil south coast and the increasingly flourishing fortress town of Galle.
Introduction
The Centauria is a simple two-plus star hotel, with 51 rooms, and is valuable for its basic comforts and close proximity to the national park. It has an appealing natural setting, with the Suriya Kanda range rising beyond Chandrika tank, best appreciated from the swimming pool and outside cafe-bar. Although much of it remains bedecked in the olive green so believed of the Ceylon Hotels Corporation, it has quietly upgraded. A reminder of older Sri Lankan times, made more comfortable for modern demands.

Accommodation
Fifty rooms are led by four new lakeside cottages, comprising eight rooms in total, with a/c and more modern furnishings, and recommended. All have balconies, kitchen area with fridge, small table and ironing boards. Bathrooms are much superior to the main wing of the hotel. In the main wing, there are 28 standard a/c rooms and 14 `luxury' a/c rooms, so rated because they are more spacious. All have balconies overlooking the lake, satellite TV, phone and en-suite bathrooms with shower (five luxury rooms have a bath).
Facilities
Old-style bar/restaurant, currency encashment, quiet sitting area, doctor on call, IDD, laundry. There is an Ayurveda centre in a pretty cottage-style building.
Excursions
There is lake fishing, boat rides and cycling. Go on an adventurous safari into the Uda Walawe National Park with 30,820 hectares of protected jungle which resembles an African game park. According to wildlife reports, there are about 500 elephants in the park and they often roam in herds of up to 100. Numerous species of birds as well as other animals including deer, monitor lizards and crocodiles can be spotted here. Feeding times at the Elephant Transit Camp just adjoining the National Park is also another wonderful experience especially for children. Here, 31 orphaned baby elephants ranging from just 1 month old to two years are cared for by the Wild Life Department until they are ready to be set free once again into the Uda Walawe jungle. There are specific feeding times during the day and each session lasts only for about half and hour. Guests are advices to go on time to ensure that they do not miss this wonderful experience. There is an Elephant Sponsorship Programme that enables guests to support this important effort at conserving the Elephant population in Sri Lanka.
