The Blue Magpie Lodge is situated 150km from Colombo, a journey that takes approximately four hours, on the edge of Sri Lanka’s most famous rainforest: Sinharaja. This huge virgin forest reserve, the home to a remarkable array of endemic species, is recognised as a UNESCO-protected World Heritage Site and an international Biosphere Reserve. While seeing mammals can be harder than in some of the other national parks, walking in the thick jungle can be exhilarating and Red Dot highly recommends a visit.
Introduction
As velvet white mist rolls in to a chorus on of bird song, the words breathtaking and beautiful appear inadequate. The Blue Magpie Lodge is a basic property, but one blessed with a truly stunning natural location. Surrounded by lush forest, Blue Magpie, a short drive to the Sinharaja park entrance, has 12 simple rooms with en suite bathrooms, all with hot water but no modern frills – this is a place for nature lovers not cable TV addicts. The property has a friendly management team and the food is delicious.

The Lodge has 12 basic rooms with attached bathrooms. Do not expect matching furnishings and subtle decorations. This is simple living, electricity may be intermittent, although the lodge does have its own generator, and you may even find yourself sharing your bedroom with an insect or two. But nature lovers are repeatedly entralled by the surroundings and a restaurant serves delicious traditional Sri Lankan cuisine. Obviously, the main attraction is the forest and we recommend you leave early in the morning to explore Sinharaja. The local guides and park wardens are extremely knowledgeable. Specialist guides can also be arranged. This is a bird-watchers paradise with over 20 species endemic to Sri Lanka -- orange-billed Babbler, Red-faced Malkoha, Ashy-headed Babbler, Green-billed Coucal and the famous Sri Lanka Blue Magpie.

Note: At certain times of year it might be advisable to complete the journey by foot. You may therefore prefer to pack an overnight bag, in the event that you choose to leave some of your luggage in the car overnight.
