Stardust Beach Hotel, Arugam Bay
Price From:  US $ 67.50 (Double Cabana, BB Basis, Twin)
Location
Stadust Beach Hotel with its comfortable rooms and laid back ambience, has been THE place to stay in Arugam Bay ever since it started over 20 years ago. Situated by the estuary where the Pottuvil lagoon meets the shimmering waters of the Indian Ocean, Stardust is ideally poised to experience the thrilling waves which is at its best for surfing from July to August, as well as the magnificent nature and wildlife that inhabits the lagoon. Arugam Bay is famously known as one of 10 best surf spots in the world and dedicated surfers return each year to experience the thrilling waves and the relatively secluded beaches. Keen surfers usually make the eight hour long journey on the A4 route directly from Colombo to Arugam Bay, which is tiring but well worth the trip. Since Arugam Bay is easily assessable from other parts of the country including the southern highlands (Badulla, Ella, Haputale), central hills (Kandy), Buttala foothills (Uda Walawe, Yala, Tissa) and the South Coast, it can be easily included into a tour of Sri Lanka.
Introduction
Set amidst coconut palms and a riot of colourful bougainvilleas, Stardust Beach Hotel spreads over two acres of sandy beachfront property which consists of a main hotel area with dining and living facilites and a separate `Rainbow Village’ with three cabanas that provide more privacy if booked in its entirety for a larger group of friends or family. What Stardust lacks in five-star facilities, it makes up in comfort, cleanliness, excellent food and a genial atmosphere. Rise early and take in the magnificent sunrise and chirping parrots on the tree tops. Go surfing or explore ancient ruins and the natural wilderness that surrounds Arugam Bay. By dusk, relax with a Ayurveda massage or Yoga at Stardust’s wellness centre by the beach. Stardust Beach Hotel was started over two decades ago by a Danish couple – Per and Merete who put Arugam Bay on the tourism map. The hotel was badly affected by the Boxing Day tsunami in 2004 which tragically took away the life of Per. After much hardship, Stardust has now been refurbished and continues to be run by Merete who ensures that guests are well taken care of.

There are several popular point breaks including Ullah Point, Pottuvil Point, Surf Point, Peanut Farm Point, and Crocodile Rock. `Surf Point’ that breaks at the headland in front of Arugam Bay is suitable for body surfing and beginners; Pottuvil Point situated on a deserted beach north of Arugam Bay is more suitable for experienced surfers; and Crocodile Rock, another challenging surf point, is located south of Arugam Bay.
