Location
Garden Beach Hotel has an enviable location. It is one of only two hotels on the turtle beach at Kosgoda, where the endangered Marine Turtles regularly come ashore to lay their eggs. The hotel has good relations with the nearby Kosgoda turtle hatchery, which enables its guests to make responsible, eco-friendly night-time treks, only a short distance up the beach, to see the turtles at work. The journey from Colombo will take about 2 hours.
Introduction
Garden Beach, opened in late 2005, is a small hotel built on modern lines and offers decent mid-range facilities. From the moment you enter a bright reception area, the hotel has a gleamingly modern feel. The sun-garden leading to the sea is smart and well-tended. The managing director, Mahinda Abeygunawardena, has long experience in the hotel trade and strong links in the local community, and is committed to providing a responsive and well-trained staff.

Accommodation
Garden Beach has eight ensuite rooms on two floors, including two inter-connecting rooms suitable for families, boasting good-quality fittings. All have IDD phone, minibar, a/c and fan, TV and balcony with a view of the broad and sandy Kosgoda beach over the garden area. But it is the two top-floor suites that achieve surprising quality for a hotel of this size. The suites have a sitting area and, though an alcove, the master bedroom with king sized four-poster. A walnut table allows comfortable in-room dining, by candlelight overlooking the sea if you wish. An additional bedroom is on a second level, up an open-plan staircase.
Facilities
Restaurant with bar, small swimming pool, well-tended grassy area on two levels with sunbeds and sun shades. The tiled restaurant, which dominates the ground floor of the hotel, has good-quality teak and walnut tables and chairs, and relies heavily on local produce, producing eastern and western dishes of reliable standard. Business facilities can be found in a separate building across a small car park. There is 24-hour room service, and a special sleeping room for babies. Mahinda also lends his considerable expertise to the arranging of sea-fishing trips.
Excursions
Visit Kosgoda's Marine Turtle hatchery - a valuable conservation project that protects the endangered Marine Turtles of Sri Lanka. Globally, all seven species of marine turtles existing are endangered. Out of these seven, five species of sea turtles come ashore to nest in Sri Lanka. The process of marine turtles nesting, hatchlings being born, and swimming back to sea is an ancient and phenomenal ritual that is fascinating to observe. Visit Lunuganga, a garden retreat that was originally an old rubber plantation that Geoffrey Bawa, Sri Lanka's most famous architect, transformed into a haven of peace.
