Hotel Moonbeam has a prime aspect on the surfing beach of Hikkaduwa, Sri Lanka's liveliest west-coach beach settlement. A mile-long, broad strip of sandy beach, scattering of beach bars and restaurants and collection of largely budget properties makes Hikkaduwa young and affordable and gives it a mildly bohemian edge. Hikkaduwa is about two-and-a-half hours from Colombo. The historic city of Galle is just 30 minutes from here.
Introduction
Hotel Moonbeam is a 20-room property and benefits from the presence next door of the Moonbeam beach restaurant. This wooden, cabana-style building, with a central bar, looks directly out onto Hikkaduwa's palm-fringed, sandy beach. Grab a table and a cooling drink and wonder whether to join the surfers and the body-boarders in the bay. Red Dot recommends Moonbeam and Cinnamon Gardens as the best budget options in Hikkaduwa, although while Cinnamon Gardens can generally be relied upon to provide a relaxing environment, Moonbeam, at times, will have a somewhat noisier air.

Twenty rooms, of which 10 have ensuite bathrooms and five of these are a/c. The rooms are simple but well maintained.
Facilities
The hotel has its own small Internet café. Food in Moonbeam is reliable and keenly priced - the fresh fish is particularly appealing. The bar attracts clientele from a wide area, with western music and in peak season, a beach nightclub atmosphere generally once or twice a week.
Excursions
Situated on the palm-fringed west coat beach, and conveniently located close to many fun filled experiences, Hikkaduwa has some of the best surfing beaches and a wide range of water sports including diving over coral reefs, snorkeling, and windsurfing. Bentota's lagoon is ideal for jet skiing, water skiing, and boat trips along the river. Visit the Kosgoda Turtle Conservation Project, which is a pioneering effort in conserving the endangered Marine Turtle species that come to nest in along the west coast of the island. These coastal towns and villages also share a vibrant cultural heritage including folklore, music, and dance forms. Cottage industries such as basket weaving, mask carving, and small shops selling Dutch antiques - furniture, lamps and ornaments, makes for interesting way side shopping. The historic town of Galle, with its 17th century Dutch Fort, a UNESCO-protected World Heritage site, is a short drive from Hikkaduwa. With its well-preserved ramparts overlooking the cricket stadium, lighthouse staring into the Indian Ocean, narrow streets and, interesting restaurants and cafes full of character, Galle deserves a visit.
