Shunyata enjoys a privileged beach-front position on one of Sri Lanka's most unspoilt west-coast beaches. Strictly speaking, it rests on the lightly-developed Galabada Bay, between the bays of Bentota and Induruwa, but there can be no debate about the simple beauty and tranquillity of its setting. The historic town of Galle lies less than an hour to the south. The journey from Colombo will take about two hours.
Introduction
Shunyata, caringly run by its German owners, Juergen and Maria offers some of the best-value beach villa accommodation on the island. A feeling of harmony and peace is quite apparent here and guests are offered Ayurvedic relaxing treatments that make this an ideal retreat for a rejuvenating holiday by the beach. Shunyata possesses a small restaurant-cum-lounge and five stylish suites available for let at most appealing rates. If only some other owners of similar properties were as realistic! The owners also follow a eco friendly philosophy of using organically grown fruits and vegetables when ever possible, uses their own well water, solar heating, use of bio-degrable detergents, and ensuring that wastewater does not flow into the sea. Juergen and Maria are also involved in various community development projects.

Accommodation
The main house consists of five stylish suites all with sea views. All suites are light and airy with large French windows that let the ocean breeze flow through. The suites are well furnished with double canopied beds fitted with mosquito netting. Vibrant coloured cushions, tapestries, and statuettes add a touch of colour to the otherwise white interiors. All suites open out to balconies or verandah furnished with hammocks and sun beds for lazing around. In-room facilities include airconditioning, overhead fan, telephone, minibar and CD player. Upto 10 guests can be accommodated at Shunyata.

Ground Floor Suites: two suites both of which opens out to a private verandah and the pool. These suites also consist of a changing room and bathroom that is open to the sky on one side bathing the flowering plants within with tropical sun. The bathrooms have waterfall showers and glass washbasins.

Upper Floor Suites: The three upper floor suites are more spacious and open out to private balconies with beautiful sea views. These suites follow an open plan with a Jacuzzi at an elevated position in the room with sea views - perfect for a long soak with the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean at your feet.
Facilities
The swimming pool has a waterfall and jet streams at one end. A variety of local dishes are prepared here using essentially healthy Ayurvedic recipes that complement the wellness programmes offered at Shunyata’s Ayurveda wellness centre. International cuisine is also available on request. The owners have an active interest in Ayurveda, which ensures good standards. Deep relaxation and curative therapies as well as beauty treatments are on offer supervised by the in-house Ayurvedic Physian. A personal treatment plan is identified following an initial consultation with the physician. The Ayurveda Pavillion is built using natural materials and located 10 meteres away from the beach. The top floor consists of the treatment area with spectacular sea views. Natural oils and medicinal herbs are used for all treatments. The two beach bungalows located by the Ayurveda Pavilion houses the doctor’s consultation room and a an area for Yoga, Tai Chi, and meditation all just minutes away from the waters of the Indian Ocean.
Excursions
Several water sports including surfing, snorkeling, jet skiing are on offer just nearby in Bentota and Hikkaduwa. Go out to sea in a catamaran with the fisherman or take a boat ride along the tranquil Madu River past quaint rural villages, en route, visit the local markets, temples & craft and antique shops. Visit the nearby Lunuganga –a garden retreat that was created by Sri Lanka’s iconic architect, Geoffrey Bawa. The Lunuganga gardens were a life long project cherished by Bawa and designed with numerous varieties of foliage, many pavilions, and statues. Visit Kosgoda’s Marine Turtle hatchery – a valuable conservation project that protects the endangered Marine Turtles of Sri Lanka. Experience the southern folklore and cultural heritage with a visit to the Ariyapala Mask Museum in Ambalangoda where intricate masks used in various southern traditional dance forms are on display. Masked dancing is also performed here regularly.
