Similar to the rural location of its sister property (Ulpotha, located near Anuradhapura), Bar Reef Resort is set in the small fishing village of Alankuda amidst swaying palms and sandy beaches, moments from the azure sea which is home to pods of dolphins during the season. Bar Reef Resort is comprised of individual wattle-and-daub cabanas and family villas, all of which are set within a private garden. Meals are served in clay pots in the Ambalama overlooking the stunning infinity pool and the shimmering ocean beyond. The nights here are magical, illuminated with oil lanterns that light the pathways, twinkling fibre optic lights by the swimming pool and alluring bonfires on the beach by the boat house where drinks are served.
Wattle & Daub Cabanas: There are seven open-sided, wattle-and-daub cabanas with thatched roofs, each set in its own quarter-acre garden. They consist of a bedroom furnished with a comfortable king-sized bed and a sitting area with built-in seating (also fitted with mosquito netting) that can sleep two more, both open-sided. Two separate palm-thatched enclosures a few yards away house the bathroom (w/c and wash basin) and shower area. These open-air bathrooms are designed to blend in with the natural surroundings: the shower, fitted to a coconut tree, cascades down like a waterfall and there is no h/w. Cabanas can accommodate up-to four guests. Family Villas: There are two spacious family villas, each over 200 sq metres, set within their own fenced gardens. Each villa consists of two ensuite double rooms and a large veranda with six built-in seats that can be used as single beds. The well-designed open-air bathrooms are set within their own garden space and there is also a common bathroom and a separate garden shower that can be used by those sleeping on the veranda. The villas can accommodate up to 10 guests.
The central point is the Ambalama – an open wattle-and-daub cabana with comfortable built-in seating designed for taking in the spectacular view of the infinity pool and the turquoise seas beyond. Meals are served buffet-style in clay pots on a unique table top in the shape of an `oruwa’ (canoe). As in the village home, guests serve themselves and sit wherever they please to enjoy the delicious rice and curries, cooked with freshly available seafood and vegetables. Local beer and soft drinks are served here and guests are welcome to bring their own drinks. The main 40 metre swimming pool has a separate shallow area, ideal for children. There is also is a boat house – a cabana with thatched roof, boarded floors and lounging areas – where drinks are served at night next to a roaring bonfire. It is well-equipped with safety vests and boats for taking guests on whale and dolphin watching excursions. The Ambalama has an IPod station and there is also a communal guitar for anyone wanting to add a magic touch to their memorable nights by the sea.
Bar Reef Resort is a tranquil eco-retreat set on a 2km private beach stretch in the rural fishing village of Alankuda on the north-west coast.
