Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage established in 1975 by the Sri Lanka Department of Wildlife Conservation serves as an orphanage, nursery and a captive breeding ground for Asian elephants. Located in a 25 acre coconut plantation in Kegalle, halfway between Colombo and Kandy, Pinnawala is considered to have the largest herd of captive elephants in the world.
