The Safari occupies a scenic position on the banks of the ancient Tissa Wewa (reservoir). Previously known as Tissamaharama Resort, which was a basic guesthouse, the hotel has been transformed into a stylish four-star hotel. Minutes from Tissamaharama town, this is a convenient base from which to explore Tissa’s ancient cultural heritage, the jungle shrine of Kataragama, Yala National Park and the Bundala bird sanctuary. Tissamaharama can be accessed via the south coast or from the highlands, or hop on board the sea plane which now lands on the Tissa Lake.
Introduction
Refurbished and rebranded, The Safari is now easily the best hotel in Tissamaharama. The 50 rooms are stylishly designed and all have spectacular lake views. The Safari is owned by the Ceylon Hotels Corporation which also owns several guesthouses and hotels across the island including the Galle Face Hotel and the Regency in Colombo and the Queens in Kandy. The Hotels Corporation has now switched from government to private ownership, a change which has brought upgrades to several of their properties island-wide.

Accommodation
There are 47 Superior Rooms and three spacious suites all with lake views. 13 of the superior rooms have private balconies overlooking the lake. Room interiors are stylishly decorated in hues of black, white and saffron and furnished with double beds. The suites are spacious and also consist of a lounge and dining area. Upon request, additional single beds are provided in the suites. Standard in-room facilities include a/c, overhead fans, flat-screen TV with satellite channels, tea/coffee facility, mini-bar, and safety locker. Ensuite bathrooms have h/w rain showers.
Facilities
The main restaurant has indoor and outdoor dining overlooking the swimming pool and lake beyond. Traditional Sri Lankan cuisine, Indian, and Western cuisine is served here. Ceylon Hotels Corporation properties are well known for serving tasty Sri Lankan rice and curries and The Safari holds up this tradition. The bar serves a range of alcoholic beverages. Other hotel facilities include wifi internet, travel desk, room service, laundry service, swimming pool set amidst lush tropical gardens, and boat rides on the Tissa Lake. Nature lovers will enjoy spotting the numerous species of birds that inhabit the small island just in front of the hotel.
Excursions
Tissamaharama was the capital of the ancient Ruhunu Kingdom in the 2nd century B.C. Tissa, named after King Kavantissa, is dominated by lakes and gigantic semi-circle shaped Buddhist Dagobas (temples). The sprawling Tissa Wewa was built by King Kavantissa 2,300 years ago. These reservoirs attract many species of water birds including cormorant, purple heron, Caspian tern and the painted stork. The sacred jungle shrine of Kataragama is located nearby, as are several ancient Buddhist temples and an archeological Museum that provides a glimpse into the ancient Ruhunu kingdom. Explore the jungles of Yala. A jeep safari into the Yala National Park is possible at dawn and again in the late afternoon when the birds and animals are more visible. Red Dot can arrange a safari jeep to come directly to The Safari hotel and get you to the park entrance on time at 6.00 am or at 4.00 pm. The excursion can take up to three hours accompanied by a wildlife tracker.
