Upper Glencairn, Dickoya
Price From:  US $ 41.18 (Standard Room, BB Basis, Twin)
Location
Nestled among the hills of the Dickoya region in central Sri Lanka, at over 4,000 feet above sea level, is Upper Glencairn -- a five-bedroom planter’s bungalow. Set amidst a working tea plantation, this century old bungalow overlooks the Castlereigh Reservoir and the sacred Adam’s Peak Mountain. The distance to Nuwara Eliya is 35 miles and Adam’s Peak is 16 miles away. The journey from Colombo will take about five hours.
Introduction
This holiday bungalow, which belongs to the Bank of Ceylon, is an ideal base for travellers climbing Adam’s Peak and is often used the night before or the morning after the climb as a resting point. The property is relatively basic inside, but the tea-estate views are magnificent and the bungalow, let by the room, is good value.

Accommodation
Upper Glencairn has four double rooms and one triple, all of which come with an attached bathroom with h/w showers. The rooms are non a/c, as is the norm in this cool corner of the island.
Facilities
Sri Lankan rice and curries and a few western dishes are served here at the main dining area. There is a bar and lounge area furnished with comfortable couches that you can sink into. The well laid-out flowering gardens and the surrounding working tea estate is ideal for long morning walks.
Excursions
Walk through the tea estate and visit the tea factory to learn about Sri Lanka’s famous crop. Sri Pada, also known as Adam’s Peak, can also be accessed from the Upper Glencairn Bungalow. This stepped mountain is a pilgrimage site to thousands of devotees from many faiths and looks spectacular at night when its lights seem to rise into the heavens. The hike up the peak will take approximately two-and-a-half hours. The climb is possible from December to April and best attempted at night where you reach the chilly mountain top to see one of the most treasured sunrises in Asia.
