Siam View Hotel, Arugam Bay
Price From:  US $ 47.20 (A/C Double Bedroom, RO Basis, Twin)
Location
Siam View, situated on the beach close to one of the popular surf points in Arugam Bay, is one of the original guest houses in this small and out-of-the-way beach village. Arugam Bay lies in the remote south-east, close to Pottuvil - an area which offers high-class surfing (the best on the island), deserted beaches, an astonishing range of flora and birdlife in the wetlands and jungles nearby in the Lahugala national park. To get here, keen surfers usually make the eight hour long journey on the A4 route directly from Colombo to Arugam Bay, which is tiring but well worth the trip. Since Arugam Bay is easily accessible from other parts of the country including the southern highlands (Badulla, Ella, Haputale), central hills (Kandy), Buttala foothills (Uda Walawe, Yala, Tissa) and the South Coast, it can be easily included into a tour of Sri Lanka.
Introduction
Siam View Hotel was originally run by a co-operative of friends from different continents who came here in the 1980s in search of peace and tranquillity on the desolate beaches of Arugam Bay. Subsequently, the hotel was badly damaged by the devastating Boxing Day tsunami of 2004, destroying most of its original rooms and buildings. Recovery has been difficult, but the spirit shines bright under the vision of one of its original owners, Fred and his Thai fiancé who now run it now as a Thai restaurant and guest house with just four a/c rooms. Siam View is a landmark in this small town of Arugam Bay with its Thai-style timber roof and an old English, red telephone booth in front of the property. The Thai food here is authentic and the restaurant comes alive each night with music and bright lights. Fred’s own home-brewed beer is served on tap and surf movies are featured on a large screen.

Accommodation
There are three doubles and one family room all with a/c, overhead fan, TV, and mini-fridge. The attached bathrooms have showers. The rooms are situated away from the beach close to the restaurant and opens out to a small garden area. The rooms are colourful and furnished with single or double beds. The family room sleeps four.
Facilities
The restaurant and bar area also has a sun deck for lounging. Authentic Thai cuisine is served here prepared with fresh vegetables and seafood purchased daily from the fishing boats. A range of alcoholic beverages including home brewed beer is served. Siam View is situated just a five minutes stroll along the beach from `Surf Point’ – a popular surf spot on the bay. Surf boards can be hired in town and surfing lessons for beginners can be organised.
Excursions
Listed as one of ten top surf spots in the world, Arugam Bay also known as AbaY, is a popular haunt for surfers especially during the peak season between July and August. There are several popular point breaks including Ullah Point, Pottuvil Point, Surf Point, Peanut Farm Point, and Crocodile Rock. `Surf Point’ that breaks at the headland in front of Arugam Bay is suitable for body surfing and beginners; Pottuvil Point situated on a deserted beach north of Arugam Bay is more suitable for experienced surfers; and Crocodile Rock, another challenging surf point, is located south of Arugam Bay. Waves of up to 5–6ft offer up to a 400 metre `ride’ and the relatively isolated beaches are a major attraction to surfers. Explore the nearby Pottuvil lagoon, home to monitor lizards, monkeys, and numerous species of birds. Trek through wilderness to the ruins of the Kudumbigala jungle monastery which dates back to the 2nd century BC with rock caves, inscriptions, and ruins of stone buildings. The spectacular views from the rock extend as far as Kataragama.
