The Villa, Unawatuna

The Villa is a friendly and unassuming property with a privileged position on one of the most-loved stretches of coastlines in Sri Lanka - Unawatuna Bay -- only a few miles beyond the thriving south-coast city of Galle. Large hotels are conspicuous by their absence and this beautiful stretch of coast is dotted with a few smaller hotels and guesthouses, seafood restaurants and lively beach bars. The journey from Colombo's International Airport averages four-and-a-half hours.
Introduction
The Villa is a small yet individualistic three-storey property with trellised windows, verandahs and interiors furnished with Dutch period antiques. It stands on a narrow strip of land, a few metres from a beautiful curving bay graced with a strip of golden sand and a calm turquoise sea. Here you can experience Unawatuna's characterful lifestyle. Relaxing by the waters of the Indian Ocean, surfing & snorkeling, eating out at small cafes and restaurants, bars and that come alive with music at night, and exploring Unawatuna's fishing villages.

Accommodation
Six en-suite bedrooms with h/w showers. Rooms are furnished with four-poster beds fitted with mosquito netting. Overhead fans and ocean breezes helps to keep the rooms cool. The upper floor rooms have spectacular views of the Unawatuna beach.
Facilities
The Villa's beach restaurant offers Sri Lankan rice and curries, Eastern and western cuisine. Tea and snacks are served in the simple gardens, with the beach a few yards away. Staff are friendly and welcoming.
Excursions
Safe swimming is possible in Unawatuna's beautiful beaches. Several water sports are on offer including deep sea fishing, catamaran and boat rides, surfing, and snorkelling. High on the headland of Unawatuna Bay is Rhumassala Temple. With beautiful views stretching out over the Indian Ocean a walk around the headland near the temple is very special. Famed for the natural medicinal herbs nearby you will walk through hidden villages and wooded valleys, eventually finding yourself on `Jungle Beach' - a little known and secluded beach. Galle's historic 17th century Dutch Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site is just 15 minutes away. Hours can be spent exploring the maze of narrow streets lined with Dutch and British period buildings still in use, the sturdy ramparts looking out to sea, the growing collection of art galleries, antique shops, cafes and restaurants.
