Madushala Senaratne, Explore Sri Lanka , May 2010
'Making my way through the entrance of this colonial property, shrouded in mystique and splendor, I’m greeted by an old style doorman, who transports me back to a bygone era. The grand love story – that of Sir Thomas Maitland, a British Governor of Ceylon and the beautiful dancer, Lovina, seems to echo through the hallways, as I walk towards the poolside terrace where I watch the waves of the Indian Ocean splash against the coast of Mount Lavinia….. For over 200 years, Mount Lavinia Hotel has invited its guests…to step back in time and indulge in the hotel’s grandeur and charm. Nestled on the beachfront, Mount Lavinia hotel is rich in taste and tradition.'
Lonely Planet , Jan 2009
'Built in 1836 as the residence of the British governor, this magnificently marbled hotel overlooks the sea. About a third of the hotel - the part referred to as the `governor’s wing’ has colonial architecture, the reminder is modern. There’s a private sandy beach and a beautifully positioned pool and terrace'
Royston Ellis, Sri Lanka – the Bradt Travel Guide, Second Edition , Sep 2006
'The Mount Lavinia hotel used to be visited solely because of its connections with the past. Established as a hotel in 1877, it maintained colonial standards and was famously featured as the hospital in Bridge on the River Kwai. A wing was added in 1983 and gradually it has undergone modernisation to turn into a mainstream hotel that just happens to have an old heart'
