Mandara Resort, a new 20-room upmarket boutique hotel, is nestled between the estuary of Pollathu Modara River and the Indian Ocean beaches of the deep south. The hotel is situated on a coconut plantation at the edge of the sea and has the most luxurious hotel facilities in Mirissa. Mirissa Bay with its surfing beaches, budget hotels, characterful beach bars and restaurants are just a short ride away. Mirissa is located between the towns of Weligama and Matara - about four hours drive south from Colombo. The historic city of Galle is 25 minutes away from Mirissa.
Introduction
A sister property to Mandara Rosen in Kataragama, the Mandara Resort in Mirissa was opened in May 2008 and offers luxury accommodation by this much-loved south-coast bay. The 20 rooms and suites are well designed along modern lines with some having private plunge pools. The swimming pool with fibre optic lighting adds a touch of romance at night. Numerous watersports including surfing, snorkelling, and coastal cruises as well as Whale and Dolphin spotting excursions are offered just nearby.

Accommodation
Mandara Resort has 4 Standard, 4 Superior, 8 Deluxe, and 4 Penthouse rooms all with a/c and fully equipped with satellite TV, DVD/CD player and home theatre system, mini-bar, safety locker, internet facility and telephone. Bathrooms of all Deluxe and Penthouse rooms are fitted with Jacuzzis. The four Superior rooms have private plunge pools. The interiors of each room are individually designed using local fabrics. The rooms are furnished with double beds with the Penthouse suites having two double beds and a sitting area.
Facilities
The main lobby area opens out to the swimming pool and the sea beyond. The pool is lit with twinkling fibre optic lighting at night providing a romantic setting for dining in the garden or a night swim. Sri Lankan and international cuisine is served at Mandara Beach prepared with fresh seafood straight from the fishing boats. Meals are served in the garden overlooking the pool, in the main dining area, or in the privacy of your own room. There is a fully-equipped gym and a small Ayurveda centre offering relaxing massages. The gardens lead to a secluded beach where you can relax under a palm tree and perhaps watch the dolphins at a distance as they frolic in the sea.
Excursions
Mirissa Water Sports offers exciting water sports activities such as sailing, fishing, coastal cruises, river trips, sea kayaking, snorkelling and boating. The south of Sri Lanka beyond Dondra is considered one of the best locations in the world for spotting Blue Whales, Sperm Whales and Spinner Dolphins. Whale watching excursions are organised by Mirissa Water Sports during the season from December to April when the seas are calm. Mirissa Water Sports is a charitable organisation helping to generate employment for the youth from the tsunami affected coastal areas. We also recommend a visit to Galle’s 17th century Dutch Fort, a UNESCO-protected World Heritage site and a melting pot of cultural influences. Several hours can be spent wandering along the narrow streets, well preserved ramparts and the lighthouse. The thick, high ramparts that protect and distinguish the Fort are today used for romantic evening strolls and perhaps an ad-hoc game of cricket.
