Polonnaruwa, the 11th century capital of Sri Lanka, is the best conserved of its fascinating ancient cities. Sudu Araliya sits in the centre of the town itself, deep in the cultural triangle, by the serene banks of a large and ancient reservoir. The journey from Colombo’s International Airport will take up to five hours.
Introduction
Sudu Araliya is a modern hotel with reasonably-equipped rooms. Half of the 30 a/c rooms face the Parakrama Samudraya, one of the biggest reservoirs in Sri Lanka, with the other half facing well-maintained tropical gardens. Facilities are reasonable at a very attractive price, but reports on cleanliness and upkeep in rooms and the restaurant are very mixed.

The a/c rooms are fitted with satellite TV, telephone, minibar, hair dryer and attached bathrooms with h/w showers. There is 24-hour room service.
Facilities
The Ayurvedic wellness centre offers relaxing herbal therapies. There is a swimming pool, sunbathing area, restaurant & coffee shop, bar, live entertainment, hairdresser, IDD telephone facilities, fax, and internet access.
Excursions
Possible excursions include boat trips, fishing, bird watching, jungle treks, elephant safari, jeep safaris, and cycling tours. Polonnaruwa remained Sri Lanka’s royal medieval capital until the late 13th century. Today, this ancient city’s ruins remain in remarkably good nick, and are a fascinating site to visit especially the magnificent sculptures of Lord Buddha at the Gal Vihara cut into Granite stone. We recommend a visit to the Polonnaruwa Archeological Museum prior to visiting the ruins themselves. The thoughtfully laid out exhibits here gives a good insight into the ancient kingdom of Polonnaruwa.
