Moonhill is a wonderful four-bedroom villa perched on a small hillock in the rural village of Goyambokka, a few minutes away from Tangalle in the deep south. A two minute walk down hill takes you to the magnificent Tangalle Bay with gleaming white sand and the turquoise seas which is safe for swimming during the season from December to April. The travel time from Colombo’s international airport will take about six hours which will be reduced considerably once the Southern highway is completed by the end of 2011. Alternatively, jump aboard an Air Taxi service which flies to Dickwella, about 20 mins from the villa.
Introduction
Moonhill is designed very much like a typical southern home with the bedrooms and living areas all opening out to a large central courtyard which is open to the sky. Verandas, high wooden ceilings, polished cement floors, and large open spaces keep this villa cool and airy. Start the day at the terrace spotting the numerous birds including peacocks that frequent the gardens. By mid-morning, go down to the beach and take in the sun. For the more adventurous, there are lots to explore nearby including village markets, ancient temples, and wildlife sanctuaries. Moonhill can be booked by the room or as a whole and can comfortably accommodate up to eight guests.

Accommodation
Moonhill has four spacious bedrooms – three doubles and a master bedroom all opening out to the central courtyard. The interiors are stylish with comfortable double beds dressed in fine white linen. The ensuite bathrooms have h/w showers, washbasin and w/c. The luxurious master bedroom opens out to the garden with a private terrace as well as the central courtyard. This room is furnished with a four-poster bed and the ensuite secluded outdoor bathroom has an antique roll top bath. The rooms are not airconditioned, but have overhead ceiling fans and a constant breeze that keeps you cool. Children are welcome at Moonhill and an extra bed or cot is available for a child wishing to share a room with parents. Prior notice at the time of booking is required to provide an extra bed.
Facilities
The living and dining rooms are spacious and open to the back terrace and the lush green gardens beyond. The living and dining room furniture is out of solid mahogany and designed along contemporary lines and blended with stylish soft furnishings. There is a fully equipped kitchen with a cooker, electric oven, toaster, kettle and blender. Guests can choose to do their own cooking or order meals from the in-house menu. The staff is helpful and will be happy to assist with the grocery shopping. Fresh vegetables are available at the local village market and seafood including prawns, crab, and lobster is brought to the doorstep by the local fisherman. There is no swimming pool, but the beach just a few minutes away with its cove like bay is perfect for swimming. Other villa facilities includes a CD player, wifi internet, board games, body board for surfing, inflatable paddling pool, high chair and travel cot for children, and laundry service. A relaxing Ayurvedic massage can be arranged with prior notice.
Excursions
Tangalle is well known for its secluded cove like beaches. Tangalle’s diving centre will arrange deep sea diving and trips to the nearby reef. Explore the surrounding village past paddyfields and stop by at a wayside boutiques for a refreshing drink of king coconut (thambili) or a cup of tea. Visit the ancient Mulkirigala temple or the Wewurukannala Temple with its massive 165ft high Buddha stature. Visit Rakuwa, a small fishing village near Tangalle where a fascinating Marine Turtle Conservation project is helping to save this endangered species. Other attractions nearby, include Yala National Park, one of the largest national parks in the island where elephant and leopard can be seen, a short 90-minute drive away. The Bundala Bird Sanctuary is located about 45 minutes away.
