Beyond the beach, however, there exists a private and ancient world entirely worth discovering – and for the time being Mandalay Lake is perhaps the outside world’s only outpost in the quaint and quiet lakeside village of Katholuwa. Location
Perched on the banks of the serene Koggala Lake, Mandalay is a luxurious three bedroomed holiday villa immersed in Sri Lanka’s southern rural life. The beaches of Unawatuna and Koggala are just a short stroll away and the historic city of Galle with its 17th century Dutch Fort is just 15 minutes away. The journey from Colombo’s International Airport will take approximately 4 hours - or take the Air Taxi and fly directly into Koggala, which lands just in front of the house.
Introduction
Koggala Lake scattered with 16 small islands, is a peaceful setting where rural life unfolds and nature reigns supreme. Fish eagles to monitor lizards share this habitat along with generations of villagers with a rich southern heritage. Koggala was the home of Sri Lanka’s famous authors, Martin Wickramasinghe - whose books about life in Koggala and Madolduwa are still lovingly studied by school children island wide. Designed by Sri Lanka’s architecture guru, the late Geoffrey Bawa, Mandalay sits amidst tranquil tropical gardens at the edge of Koggala Lake directly facing the Madolduwa island. Mandalay consists of two separate pavilions – a sleeping pavilion and the other with stylish living and dining areas. Mandaly follows an open plan with large living spaces, high roofs, white cemented floors, and verandas that lets you take in the surrounding tropical oasis. Interiors are furnished with antiques and tastefully infused with vibrant colours.
