Location
Warwick Gardens is a refurbished colonial tea planter’s bungalow situated on a 30-acre tea estate in Ambewela. En route to Hortain Plains – a spartan high plateau with patches of forest -- Warwick Gardens is ideally placed for exploration of the central hills and tea country. Ambewela can be accessed by road in about 45 minutes via Nuwara Eliya, past Hakgala, or by train. The Ambewela train station is just 15 minutes drive from Warrick Gardens. The journey from Colombo’s International Airport will take about six hours.
Introduction
Guests are provided with a personalised service at this Edwardian-style bungalow which was once the home of a Scottish tea planter, and which has been caringly brought back to life by Jetwing Hotels. The five luxurious ensuite bedrooms each with a unique ambience, elegant living and dining rooms complete with working fire places, and sprawling gardens make this an ideal holiday retreat. Although rented by the room, ample communal spaces and gardens allow much privacy.

Accommodation
Five elegantly bedrooms overlook the front gardens and the mountains beyond or the herb gardens at the back. The rooms are furnished with antique beds dressed in fine linen and have working fire places in four of the rooms. The Glenoch suite is situated on the ground floor while the Warrick suite, Netherleigh, Breamaer, and Oakleigh are situated on the upper floor. Glenoch: Located on the ground floor, is furnished with a Queen size bed and has an ensuite bathroom with bathtub and h/w shower. The windows open out to the herb gardens.

Netherleigh: With a discreet entrance, this is a romantic hideaway ideal for couples with beautiful views over the front gardens, tea estate and mountains. Also known as the white room, the interiors here are milky white with a comfortable king size bed.

Oakleigh: Similar to Glenoch, but located on the upper floor overlooking the herb garden. Room is furnished with a queen size bed.

Breamaer: Facing the vegetable gardens and mountains beyond, this is a twin room furnished with antique beds.

Warrick Suite: This is a spacious master suite furnished with a king sized four poster canopied antique bed and has beautiful views of the front gardens, tea estate and mountains. The ensuite bathroom has a Victorian style bathtub and h/w shower.
Facilities
A cosy living room, complete with a fire place and grand piano, opens out to a patio and terraced gardens. A dramatic red dining room with a 10-seater table and crystal chandelier, also opens out to the front gardens. There is a separate breakfast room, lounge area with satellite TV, selection of DVDs and indoor board games, and office room with telephone and an extensive library on Sri Lanka’s wildlife and cultural heritage. Sri Lankan rice and curries, Indian and western cuisine are served here prepared with fresh herbs, vegetables and fruits from their own gardens. Warwick Gardens also has a farm from which free range eggs and fresh milk is collected each morning. A collection of wines and spirits are on offer. There are no meal times or set menus. Meals are prepared according to guest’s wishes and served in the dining room or in the gardens overlooking the tea-covered hills. Other facilities include room service, butler service, doctor on call and baby cots on request. The manager, who is also a naturalist, is knowledgeable about the surrounding area and will accompany guests on nature treks and walks.
Excursions
Several treks are possible winding through tea estates and factory, vegetable gardens, and rural villages. A challenging full day’s trek up Olive Mountain is possible for those who are more energetic. Visit Hortain Plains located about an hour away from the bungalow. The grassy plains, which are interspersed with small patches of forest, are home to leopards, sambur, deer, bear, monkeys and a rich array of birds. Visit the Hakgala Botanical Gardens With magnificent views of the surrounding hills and the jungles of the Hakgala Nature Reserve. En route, stop at the Seetha Eliya Kovil dedicated to Seetha, queen of Rama (god Shiva) and linked to the tales of Ramayana. Nuwara Eliya situated an hour away, is also an interesting day’s excursion. Flanked by Mount Pidurutalagala and Single Tree Mountain, Nuwara Eliya was made into a summer retreat by the British in the early 1800s and much of its colonial character still remains. The leafy by-roads are scattered with Victorian-style 19th century homes, bungalows, guesthouses and hotels complete with gabled roofs, large open fireplaces and hardwood floors. Play a round of golf at the challenging Nuwara Eliya Golf course. The clubhouse and bar is an atmospheric place to enjoy a drink and meal after your round.
