Location
La Maison Nil Manel is a charming six-bedroom boutique villa in the west coast town of Ahungalla, offering comfortable rooms, excellent fusion cuisine and an exotic setting where the owners have personally attend to every detail. The villa is five minutes walk from the beach and spreads over a two-acre plot. Situated between Bentota and Hikkaduwa, Ahungalla is about a two-and-threequarter hours drive from Colombo.
Introduction
Nil Manel is the creation of its owners Monique and Chanaka, a Franco-Sri Lankan couple who bring their own talents into the daily running of this boutique hotel. Monique is an interior designer who has successfully blended Sri Lankan art and architecture with French touches creating an exotic ambience within. Chanaka, who is a master chef with wide experience working overseas, turns out sumptuous fusion cuisine. Although the Boxing Day Tsunami of 2004 had a devastating affect on Nil Manel, its recreation is a testament to their unyielding passion for this boutique hotel. The six spacious rooms and suites at Nil Manel, each with a different style and ambience, spread over three floors, all overlooking the swimming pool. Private terraces, cemented floors, antique timber staircases and stylish cement-rendered bathrooms gives character. Interiors are decorated with Dutch period antiques, coloured antique lamps, local object d’art, and vibrantly-coloured sari fabrics. The gardens are landscaped with tall leafy trees, palms and flowering tropical plants.
