The Hide, Kalamatiya
Location
The Hide is a homely three bedroomed eco-retreat in the rural village of Kalamatiya, a tranquil spot in the deep south where the sound of bird call is ever present. With the Kalamatiya Bird Sanctuary just 15 minutes away, this is an ideal retreat for nature lovers. Bundala and Yala lie further east down the simple coastal road.
Introduction
The Hide is a refurbished village home in which heritage architecture has been blended with some modern comforts. Saffron-coloured exterior walls, courtyards and verandahs, high timber ceilings, lotus-filled ponds and tranquil gardens scattered with fruit and medicinal plants form the character of this retreat. The interiors are tastefully furnished with antiques and local object d’art made of terracotta, reed, and metal. Set off early morning to the Kalamatiya Bird Sanctuary, a birdwatchers paradise, or relax by the pool with the sound of leaves rustling in the wind or the cry of a peacock in the distance. The Hide has been created by its Sri Lankan owner and his colleagues to benefit the surrounding village community. Up to 80 per cent of the income earned from this eco-retreat goes to the village for purposes of upgrading schools, temples and providing scholarships for school children. Other initiatives include purchasing of organically-grown fresh fruits and vegetables directly from neighbouring farmers; use of bicycles and trishaws belonging to the villagers so that they can earn an income; an emphasis on preserving local traditions and cultural heritage; and environmental conservation. The use of solar energy, harvesting of rain water, compost making, and avoiding the use of plastics are some of the eco-friendly practices at the Hide.
