Thaproban is a much-loved and now upgraded guest house with a privileged position on the glittering Unawatuna Bay at the centre of a small and characterful strip of beach bars and restaurants. Stroll out of your room down the tiny garden and feel the sand between your toes. Galle's historic 17th century Dutch Fort is a ten minute drive. The journey from Colombo's International Airport will take approximately two hours via the Southern highway.
Introduction
Thaproban is one of the favourite eating spots for a largely youthful crowd that is attracted to Unawatuna by its beautiful horseshoe bay and jumble of simple beach bars and restaurants. Fully refurbished in 2008/9, it also offers comfortable rooms in a relaxed environment. The hotel is situated on three floors with the restaurant on the ground floor and all rooms located on the floors above. Thaproban is the sister hotel of the highly-regarded Thambapanni, situated on a hillock a few minutes walk away. The Sri Lankan owner, Preshan, ensures good standards at both properties.

Accommodation
Reopened in October 2008 after an extensive renovation, Taproban is now at the classy end of budget. It has 14 comfortable a/c bedrooms with stylish ensuite bathrooms offering reliable, good-value accommodation only yards from the beach. Thaproban has Deluxe and Superior rooms as well as two Penthouse rooms. All have a/c, flat screen TV with satellite channels, mini-bar, spacious ensuite bathrooms with h/w rain head showers and private balconies.

Deluxe Rooms: There are six Deluxe Rooms furnished with double or single antique style canopied four-poster beds fitted with mosquito netting. Deluxe rooms are located on the first floor and ground floor. The Two Deluxe rooms on the ground floor open directly on to the beach area where the beach restaurant is located. Other rooms open out to a private balcony with only a slight corner view of the sea.

Superior Rooms: More spacious, the four Superior rooms are situated on the first and second floors. The first floor superior rooms have direct sea views. The second floor superior rooms open on to a private balcony with only a slight corner view of the sea. The Superior Rooms are more spacious than the Deluxe Rooms.

Penthouse Rooms: The two Penthouse rooms have the best sea views and are located on the second floor. These rooms consist of a second room which is located at a higher level and shares one bathroom with the master bedroom.

Standard Rooms: Thaproban has just two standard rooms which is part of the old building and opens out to the front roadway. These rooms have attached bathroom with h/w shower, TV and mini-bar on request.
Facilities
The front ground floor open-sided restaurant serves a range of Sri Lankan and western dishes. This restaurant area has wi-fi facilities. Dine under the stars at their intimate beach restaurant with spectacular sea views. A range of seafood dishes are served here along with alcoholic beverages. There is room service and the staff is friendly adding to the homely ambience at Taproban.
Excursions
Scuba diving and snorkelling is possible in Unawatuna Bay. Venture out just off the coast and you will find marine life as well as shipwrecks waiting to be explored. Visit the Rhumassala Temple with beautiful views stretching out over the Indian Ocean. A walk around the headland near the temple is very special. Famed for the natural medicinal herbs nearby you will walk through hidden villages and verdant jungle valleys eventually finding yourself on "Jungle Beach"- a little-known and secluded beach. The historic town of Galle, with its 17th century Dutch Fort, a UNESCO-protected World Heritage site is just a ten-minute drive. With its well-preserved ramparts overlooking the cricket stadium, lighthouse, narrow streets, interesting restaurants and cafes, Galle Fort deserves hours of exploration.
