Muthumuni Ayurveda Beach Resort opened in August 2008 and is located in the west coast town of Beruwala. A holistic wellness resort offering a range of relaxing and curative Ayurvedic therapies, Muthumuni is set amidst tranquil gardens leading upto the Indian Ocean. The journey from the international airport will take about three hours via Colombo which is located just one 1.5 hours away.
Introduction
Muthumuni’s experience in this ancient healing wisdom of Ayurveda goes back several years to their original wellness centre located by a river in Beruwala. The new Ayurvedic Beach Resort is set on a narrow strip of land leading upto the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. Set amidst tropical gardens, this saffron coloured eco-friendly resort offers all modern conveniences. There are plans for 34 rooms in total out of which 20 have been completed. Headed by Dr. Alawattegama, an experienced Ayurvedic physician, a range of relaxing as well as curative Ayurvedic treatments are on offer at Muthumuni addressing a range of medical problems including control of cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, and arthritis to name a few. Although guests are welcome for even a night for a relaxing massage, a minimum stay of two weeks is required for the more intensive curative treatments. A tranquil Ayurveda wellness centre, yoga pavilion and area for meditation complete this wellness resort.

Accommodation
There are 17 two storey saffron coloured chalets housing 34 rooms spread across a long and narrow strip of land leading to the sea. Twenty rooms have been completed including the two chalets closer to the beach with sea views. All other rooms open out to the lush tropical gardens full of fruit and medicinal trees that attract many birds. All rooms have A/C and are furnished with double or twin beds. Other in-room facilities include TV, IDD telephone, internet facility, and mini-fridge (upon request). The ensuite bathrooms have h/w showers.
Facilities
Muthumuni has an exclusive Ayurveda restaurant where meals are prepared according to each guest’s treatment plan that has been set out by the doctor. Fresh vegetables as well as fish and chicken is served prepared according to traditional Ayurvedic recipes. Alcoholic beverages are not served. The Ayurveda Centre is beautifully designed and set within tranquil gardens with natural granite bath tubs that are similar to the original ones used thousands of years ago for Aurveda treatments. Following an initial consultation with the Ayurvedic physician, a treatment plan is put into practice which includes upto 4 -5 treatments a day consisting of oil massages, steam baths, flower baths, and more intensive therapies. To encourage total mind and body wellness, yoga, tai-chi and meditation is offered in a separate pavilion set in the gardens. Yoga is also conducted on the beach. For meditation, guests are also encouraged to go to the tranquil temple located on an island nearby which is accessed by boat. The swimming pool located close to the reception area and there are gift shops as well as a sea fish restaurant located on the beach. Sea bathing is possible right in front of the resort during the season from November to April. All Ayurvedic treatments; herbs, oils and medicines; yoga, tai-chi and meditation sessions are included in your room rate.
Excursions
The small holiday towns along the west coast – Kalutara, Beruwela, Bentota, Ambalangoda and Hikkaduwa – all share a vibrant cultural heritage including folklore, music and dance as well as architectural influences from the Dutch period to the more modern creations of the iconic local architect, Geoffrey Bawa. Visit nearby Lunuganga – a garden retreat that was created by Geoffrey Bawa with numerous varieties of foliage, many pavilions, and statues. Cottage industries such as basket-weaving, mask-carving and antique restoration provide for interesting shopping. Visit Kosgoda’s Marine Turtle hatchery – a valuable conservation project that protects the endangered Marine Turtles of Sri Lanka.
