'Ambience and location are the key reasons for checking in here. While other Asian hotel landmarks like Hanoi’s Metropole or Galle’s New Oriental have been gussied up, the Queens Hotel hands in there with an array of old-school rooms with charming floral décor, shiny polished floorboards, and a lobby that’s big enough for a one-day cricket match. Travellers have reported that hot water is sometimes off the agenda, but this is still the place to be during the Kandy Esala Perahera. It’s only a short walk from the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and Royal Palace compound. Next door is the cosy Pub Royale.'

'Full of Colonial character (established in 1844). 54 smallish but comfortable rooms, half a/c but, non-a/c rooms have balcony and are better value, some with tub, avoid noisy front rooms. Has restaurant, good bar, super pool…..hard to beat for slightly decaying colonial charm.'
