Location
Wapi Bungalow is a small eco-retreat overlooking the tranquil Yodakandiya reservoir in the rural village of the same name near Tissamaharama. This peaceful bungalow is situated 3 kms inland from and can be accessed from the south coast or coming from the hill country via Wellawaya. The Yala National Park and the ancient jungle shrine of Kataragama are located nearby.
Introduction
Wapi, meaning `irrigational tank’, is set at the edge of the ancient Yodakandiya reservoir where birds flock and magnificent views of Tissa’s ancient pristine white Buddhist temples come into view at a distance. Wapi is a newly built, modern holiday bungalow with high roofs, polished cemented floors, open spaces and verandahs that let you take in the surrounding views. Interiors are simple and colourful and are tastefully furnished with ample lounge chairs, colourful cushions, and comfortable beds. Wapi can accommodate upto 10 guests. The bungalow is rented only to one party at a time and is ideal for nature lovers.

Accommodation
There are 3 a/c bedrooms of which one is located on the upper floor and has an attached bathroom. Two more bedrooms are located on the ground floor, one with an attached bathroom and the other using a bathroom with an open-air shower down the hall. All bedrooms have lake views and are furnished with double or twin beds fitted with mosquito netting. Bathrooms have solar powered h/w showers. There is additional bedding for up to four more people in the open-sided hall on the upper floor.
Facilities
The open-plan ground floor has dining and living areas overlooking the gardens and the lake. The upper floor consists of a spacious hall that can be used for yoga, meditation, or relaxing. At nights this hall is used to sleep additional guests. There is a pantry equipped with a cooker, fridge, crockery and cutlery. Guests are welcome to cook their own meals or order from the in-house menu of Sri Lankan dishes and light snacks. Wapi bungalow has a cook and housekeeper/ caretaker.
Excursions
Bird watching in the bungalow garden or along the lake bund can be rewarding. Take a boat ride into the lake or stroll down to the village and the nearby temple. About 3 kms away is Tissamaharama which was the capital of the ancient Ruhunu Kingdom in the 2nd century B.C. Several ancient Buddhist temples including the Maha Stupa, Sandagiri dagoba and monastery complex, Yatala and the Menik dagobas are all located nearby as well as an archeological Museum that provides a glimpse into the ancient Ruhunu kingdom. Tissa’s ancient reservoirs attract many species of water birds including cormorant, purple heron, Caspian tern and the painted stork. The sacred jungle shrine of Kataragama, a pilgrimage site that has great religious and historical significance, is also located nearby. Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims and Christians throng to this sacred jungle shrine, built by the warrior King Dutugemunu in the 2nd century B.C. to pay homage to God Kataragama. Go on an adventurous wildlife safari into the Yala National Park or the Bundala Bird Sanctuary.
