Kabalana is a mid-range sea side hotel situated facing one of three best surf points on the South coast. Located in the coastal village of Ahangama, the hotel is centrally located to explore Sri Lanka’s southern heritage, cove like secluded beaches, and wildlife parks. The historic city of Galle is less than half an hour’s drive away. The journey from Colombo’s International Airport will take about four hours.
Introduction
Kabalana Beach Hotel, the sister hotel to The Villa in Unawatuna, has long been a favoured hotel for surfers, especially in the season from mid-October to mid-April. Recent extensions and improvements is now shifting the hotel a little more upmarket and attracting a wider spread of clientele. Kabalana’s buildings are designed along the lines of traditional `walawua’ (manor house) architecture with ornate trellis work on doors and windows, columns and verandahs, terracotta flooring and clay tiled roofs. The interiors are decorated with local art and antiques. The gardens scattered with coconut palm leads to a magnificent stretch of beach. The Indian Ocean waters here are perfect for surfing, swimming and snorkelling during the season from mid-October to April.

Accommodation
A range of accommodation is on offer at Kabalana to suite any budget. There are bungalows, villas, and double rooms (standard rooms & suites). All are tastefully designed with wooden flooring and furnished with four poster beds fitted with mosquito netting. All accommodation opens out to a private balcony or verandah with sea views and has ensuite bathrooms with h/w showers. Other in-room facilities include a/c, satellite TV, telephone, mini-bar, and room service.
Facilities
A lush, green lawn lined with palm trees envelopes the swimming pool and leads directly on to a long, sandy stretch of quiet beach. The hotel boasts a sizeable restaurant and two bars, used to host theme nights during peak season. A range of beauty treatments and rejuvenating massages are on offer at the Ayurveda wellness centre. Guests can choose to indulge in a one off relaxing massage or a week long wellness programme which is more beneficial. The herbal pastes, medicines and oils used for the treatments are all prepared in-house. For the more active, swimming, snorkeling and surfing is possible right in front of the hotel. There are also several other surf points nearby including Midigama, Weligama & Mirissa. The hotel organizes surfing instruction, surf board rental, and off shore surfing.
Excursions
Mirissa Water Sports located at the Mirissa harbour offers exciting water sports activities such as sailing, fishing, coastal cruises, river trips, sea kayaking, snorkelling and boating. The south of Sri Lanka beyond Dondra is considered one of the best locations in the world for spotting Blue Whales, Sperm Whales and Spinner Dolphins. Whale watching excursions are organised by Mirissa Water Sports during the season from December to April when the seas are calm. Experience the cultural heritage of the south with a visit the historic 17th century Galle Fort. Much time can be spent within the walls of this UNESCO World Heritage Site - with narrow streets lined with Dutch and British colonial era buildings which are still in use, sturdy ramparts looking out to sea, the lighthouse, and a growing collection of art galleries, restaurants, and cafes. Koggala Lake, with its many tiny islands inhabited with several species of birds and the nearby Martin Wickremasinghe folk museum are also interesting activities.
