Pastissade, Rakuwa

Pastissade is a rustic beach getaway with just two bedrooms overlooking the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean on a secluded stretch of coastline near Tangalle, It is within walking distance to the village of Rakuwa, known for the marine turtles that comes to nest on its shores. The coastline around Pastissade is easily accessible from the southern highlands. Colombo to Tangalle is 195km and the drive from the airport to Pastissade averages about six-and-a-half hours.
Introduction
This is an experience of simple coastal village life. Life is peaceful with a lagoon on one side, frequented by many birds, and the Indian Ocean on the other. Pastissade is an understated two-storey beach house with two good bedrooms, an upstairs dining area and immediate access to the sea. The surrounding garden area is grown with tall palms and leafy trees providing shade from the afternoon sun. All in all, this is an excellent-value property which is purpose-built for unpretentious day-to-day living in a bright, breezy and beautiful spot.

Accommodation
Bedrooms are located on the ground floor and opens out to a verandah which overlooks the garden and the sea. The ensuite bathrooms have h/w showers. One bedroom is furnished with a double bed and the second has a double plus a single bed. All beds are fitted with mosquito netting. Rooms are cooled with standing fans (there is no a/c). The breezy verandah has reclining chairs ideal for an afternoon nap.
Facilities
Upstairs there is a pleasant open sided eating area with good sea views and a barbecue. The kitchen and bar counter is located in the adjoining room which also has a TV (with local channels), DVD, a small sitting area, a Karom board (a native game, like snooker but played with your fingers using small wooden pucks), and a single bed for the caretaker-cum-chef. Sri Lankan rice and curries, BBQs and snacks are served here prepared with fresh sea food straight from the fishing boats and other produce bought from the village market. Cool drinks and fresh juices are available. Alcoholic beverages are not available, but guests can bring their own. Laze on a hammock or sun bed on the beach or watch the fisherman as they come ashore with their catch of the day. Swimming in the sea right in front of Pastissade is not possible, but a few minutes walk down the beach is good for swimming during the season from November to March.
Excursions
The south of Sri Lanka beyond Dondra is considered one of the best locations in the world for spotting Blue Whales, Sperm Whales and Spinner Dolphins. Mirissa Water Sports as well as the Ceylon Fisheries Corporation based in the Mirissa Harbour offers Whale and Dolphin watching excursions during the season from December to April. Mirissa Water Sports also offers other leisure activities including game fishing, coastal cruises, snorkelling, sea kayaking, river and mangrove trips. Visit Rakuwa, a small fishing village near Tangalle where a fascinating Marine Turtle Conservation project is helping to save this endangered species. Visit the ancient Mulkirigala temple or the Wewurukannala Temple with its massive 165ft high Buddha stature. Other attractions nearby, include Yala National Park, one of the largest national parks in the island where elephant and leopard can be seen, a short 90-minute drive away. The Bundala Bird Sanctuary is located about 45 minutes away.
