Paradise Island Health Resort is a peaceful Ayurvedic hotel situated on a spit between the river and the sea in the west coast holiday town of Bentota. This health resort is accessed by boat from the Ceysands Hotel pier, off the main Galle Road just north of Bentota town. The journey from Colombo is approximately two-and-a-quarter hours.
Introduction
The Paradise Island Health Resort is strictly for Ayurveda clients only. The setting is simple and small with basic red-brick individual cottages possessing either a riverfront or beachfront view. The Ayurveda health centre is supervised by Dr. Cooray Vidyashekhara, a renowned Ayurvedic physician, along with the owner’s Swiss wife – Dr. Rita Albiez, also an Acupuncture and Ayurveda doctor. Dr. Albiez also manages her own clinic in Switzerland. A range of treatments are offered, covering stress relief and relaxation, weight loss, and general well being. A minimum period of seven days is required for stress-relief treatment. To seek a positive lifestyle change that will impact your future well being with regards to other medical problems such as diabetes, cholesterol, weight loss etc requires a minimum of upto 14 days. Rates include accommodation, all meals, up to four treatments a day including massages and herbal baths, and all Ayurvedic medicines used.

Accommodation
The 25 comfortably furnished individual bungalows are set amidst a small garden scattered with coconut palms. Some overlook the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean with others opening out to the serene Bentota River. The bungalows consist of a double room, private verandah with sun loungers, and ensuite bathroom with h/w shower, wash basin and w/c. Other in-room facilities include overhead ceiling fans, beds fitted with mosquito netting, IDD facilities, and room service. A few a/c bungalows are available; the rest use ceiling fans.
Facilities
The Ayurveda treatment centre consists of 20 well-equipped cubicles which offer a variety of Ayurveda therapies. In addition to the two senior physicians, there are two in-house Ayurvedic doctors and a team of therapists. Medicinal herbs are sourced from nearby villages and the recommended oils, medicines, tonics and pastes are all prepared in-house. Complementary activities such as Yoga, meditation, and acupuncture are also conducted on a regular basis. The restaurant serves Ayurvedic cuisine which includes Sri Lankan rice and curries. Meals are buffet style with guidance on suitable nutrition based on individual treatment plans. Vegetables and fish are served on a daily basis with chicken served once a week. Alcoholic beverages are not available. Other facilities include a small swimming pool, yoga and meditation room, Ayurveda health product shop, and IDD and internet facilities at the reception desk.
Excursions
The Bentota beach is at its very best from December to April. During this period the sea is generally calm and safe for swimming. The small holiday towns along the west coast – Kalutara, Beruwela, Bentota, Ambalangoda and Hikkaduwa – all share a vibrant cultural heritage including folklore, music and dance as well as architectural influences from the Dutch period to the more modern creations of the iconic local architect, Geoffrey Bawa. Visit nearby Lunuganga – a garden retreat that was created by Geoffrey Bawa with numerous varieties of foliage, many pavilions, and statues. Cottage industries such as basket-weaving, mask-carving and antique restoration provide for interesting shopping. Visit Kosgoda’s Marine Turtle hatchery – a valuable conservation project that protects the endangered Marine Turtles of Sri Lanka.
