Hikkaduwa lies at the heart of the palm-fringed West coast, conveniently placed for the historic town of Galle. This small beach resort sprang to prominence as a favourite hippy haunt on the Sixties backpacker trail. It retains a youthful, informal feel, with a good scattering of beachside bars (particularly lively at weekends) and great-value seafood restaurants. Tropical Beach House, more accurately, lies in Thiranagama, half a mile south of Hikkaduwa. The drive from Colombo’s international airport will take about three hours.
Introduction
Tropical Beach House consists of two separate buildings, which can be rented out individually or in combination, sleeping four and two people respectively. This English-owned property is a simple and homely spot, offering basic Western comforts in a glorious tropical beachfront setting, a chance to chill out in your own private beach house alongside one of the finest beaches on the island.

Accommodation
The main building has two a/c bedrooms, with one double bed and two single beds, made from coconut wood. A small kitchen has fridge-freezer, washing machine, gas oven. The bathroom has h/w showers. A small dining area has a teak table and six chairs. The cabana lies alongside in an enclosed, tiny tropical garden can accommodate two more people. It has a mahogany kitchenette, an attached bathroom with h/w shower, and coconut-wood bed. Both buildings have hidden security boxes for your valuables. Bed linen and towels (not beach towels) are included.
Facilities
There is an enclosed and shaded front garden with a small plunge pool. The Beach House's emphasis on local products includes locally-made furniture, batiks and paintings. There is a selection of board games and books available, as well as badminton rackets. Outside, there is a veranda with mood lighting and the enclosed, shady front garden beyond looks out onto the beach and is ideal for children. Chintaka, the housekeeper, and Mahinda, the manager, are available for help and advice.
Excursions
Situated on the palm-fringed west coat beach, and conveniently located close to many fun filled experiences, Hikkaduwa has some of the best surfing beaches and a wide range of water sports including diving over coral reefs, snorkeling, and windsurfing. Bentota’s lagoon is ideal for jet skiing, water skiing, and boat trips along the river. Visit the Kosgoda Turtle Conservation Project, which is a pioneering effort in conserving the endangered Marine Turtle species that come to nest in along the west coast of the island. These coastal towns and villages also share a vibrant cultural heritage including folklore, music, and dance forms. Many temples, kovils, churches, and mosques are situated along the coast. Cottage industries such as basket weaving, mask carving, and small shops selling Dutch antiques - furniture, lamps and ornaments, makes for interesting way side shopping. The historical town of Galle, with its 17th century Dutch Fort, a UNESCO-protected World Heritage site, is a short drive from Hikkaduwa.
