Villa Kusum offers some of the most luxurious accommodation close to the predominantly budget and mid-market resort of Hikkaduwa. Its Dutch owners have developed a private home with high levels of personal service and comfort, interesting individual flourishes and no little charm. Care has been taken with its unfussy antique furniture and tidy, if narrow, landscaped garden, which leads directly past the swimming pool onto a quiet stretch of sandy beach. What Villa Kusum may lack in facilities it may more than makes up for in its intimate and charming atmosphere.
Accommodation
Villa Kusum possesses two suites and two rooms, all of which have en suite bathrooms. All rooms are airconditioned and are furnished with Dutch period antiques. The spacious Suites have private balconies with sea views.
The Ceylon Suite: lies on the first floor and has a spacious bedroom/living area. It is distinctive for a well-appointed bathroom with a Jacuzzi in the bath and a separate shower.
The Colonial Suite: is also on the first floor with a large living/bedroom area with table, chairs and chaise lounge, bathroom with shower and a balcony with wicker chairs, overlooking the Indian Ocean.
The Dutch room: is the third room on the first floor, located at the side of the house and with a surprisingly large shower area. It is the cheapest of the four options.
The VOC Penthouse Room: is the only room on the second floor. It is another sizeable room, with nooks and crannies and views over the ocean. Villa Kusum recommends it as the best long-stay option when special rates may be available.
Facilities
Villa Kusum strives to provide a fine-dining restaurant. Chef specialties include Western and Oriental cuisine prepared with fresh ingredients bought fresh from the daily market. Dinner is a four-course fine-dining menu served by candlelight and an a la carte menu is also available. Dining on the beach, under the stars, is also possible on request. A healthy appetite is well rewarded here. Bed and breakfast rate also include complimentary coffee and cake during mid-morning and afternoon tea, which is served either in your room, by the pool or even on the beach. There is no need to rush in the morning to reserve a sun lounger. By the swimming pool, which also possesses a Jacuzzi, your own sunbed, with beach towel, awaits you.
Excursions
Situated on the palm-fringed west coat beach, and conveniently located close to many fun filled experiences, Hikkaduwa has some of the best surfing beaches and a wide range of water sports including diving over coral reefs, snorkeling, and windsurfing. Bentota’s lagoon is ideal for jet skiing, water skiing, and boat trips along the river. Visit the Kosgoda Turtle Conservation Project, which is a pioneering effort in conserving the endangered Marine Turtle species that come to nest in along the west coast of the island. These coastal towns and villages also share a vibrant cultural heritage including folklore, music, and dance forms. Many temples, kovils, churches, and mosques are situated along the coast. The historical town of Galle, with its 17th century Dutch Fort, a UNESCO-protected World Heritage site, is a short drive from Hikkaduwa. With its well-preserved ramparts overlooking the cricket stadium, lighthouse staring into the Indian Ocean, a maze of narrow streets with colonial houses, interesting shops, art galleries, cafes and restaurants full of character, Galle deserves a visit.
