Situated overlooking the Indian Ocean in Hikkaduwa which is declared as an underwater Marine National Park, Coral Sands is an ideal destination for those seeking to explore the seas of the west coast. This small resort town of Hikkaduwa sprang to prominence as a favourite hippy haunt on the sixties backpacker trail. It is showing signs of regaining its youthful, informal feel, with one of the best surfing beaches in Sri Lanka, a good scattering of decent beachside bars, restaurants and sporadically-appearing nightclubs. Hikkaduwa lies about three hours south of Colombo and is conveniently placed for the historic town of Galle. The journey from the International Airport is about three hours.
Introduction
Coral Sands is a 75 roomed hotel with beach frontage, garden, recreational facilities and several leisure activities on offer. The long strip of beach just in front of the hotel is safe for swimming throughout the year and is also ideal for children. Within a kilometer from the hotel is one of Sri Lanka’s best surfing beaches. The hotel also has its own diving school which organizers diving expeditions as well as opportunity for guests to obtain a recognized diving license from internationally trained diving instructors.

Accommodation
75 rooms are categorised as Standard Rooms, Luxury Rooms, and 2 -3 bed roomed self service apartments. All rooms have a private balcony / terrace with sea views, airconditioning, telephone, and attached bathroom with h/w shower. The Standard rooms also have TV on request. The Luxury Rooms also have a private garden, minibar, TV, safety locker, and attached bathrooms with bathtub and h/w shower. The Apartments are ideal for guests wishing to stay for longer periods and consists of living and dining areas, bedrooms, and kitchenette.
Facilities
The large main restaurant with sea views serves Sri Lankan and western cuisine. Seafood dishes are a specialty here. The Station – the hotel’s popular beach bar serves a range of wines and cocktails. Coral Sands organises theme nights, beach BBQs, live band or D.J. music and cultural shows. There are two swimming pools and a children’s pool, a Diving School that arranges expeditions as well as opportunities to obtain a PADI and UDI diving license from internationally trained diving instructors. The hotel also has high powered boats and fishing gear for those wishing to do deep-sea fishing and sport fishing. Other facilities include 24 hour room service, IDD telephone, fax and internet access, safety lockers, doctor on call, laundry service, and cots for children upon request.
Excursions
Bentota’s lagoon is ideal for jet skiing, water skiing, and boat trips along the river. Visit the Kosgoda Turtle Conservation Project, which is a pioneering effort in conserving the endangered Marine Turtle species that come to nest in along the west coast of the island. These coastal towns and villages also share a vibrant cultural heritage including folklore, music, and dance forms. Many temples, kovils, churches, and mosques are situated along the coast. Cottage industries such as basket weaving, mask carving, and small shops selling Dutch antiques - furniture, lamps and ornaments, makes for interesting way side shopping. The historical town of Galle, with its 17th century Dutch Fort, a UNESCO-protected World Heritage site, is a short drive from Hikkaduwa. With its well-preserved ramparts overlooking the cricket stadium, lighthouse staring into the Indian Ocean, a maze of narrow streets lined with old colonial buildings, shops, restaurants and cafes full of character, Galle deserves a visit.
