Thalassa, Tangalle

Thalassa is an informal and comfortable beach house situated in the deep south overlooking the picturesque Tangalle Bay. With six bedrooms, extensive gardens, fabulous beach frontage, and spacious interiors, Thalassa is an ideal holiday retreat for two families travelling together. The journey from Colombo’s International Airport directly to Tangalle is about six-and-a-half hours. Tangalle can be accessed via the south coast or coming from the hill country past Uda Walawe National Park. When operational, an Air Taxi can be taken from Colombo to nearby Dickwella.
Introduction
Thalassa is owned by a British author who has created a relaxing and inspiring setting for her family which is now open to guests. Bookshelves filled with interesting titles, movies, photographs, and object d’ art collected from her travels across the world are available to all to enjoy. Designed by Sri Lankan architect, Amila de Mel, Thalassa is a modern tropical villa infused with a touch of Moorish and Sri Lankan design features. Large open spaces and terraces let you relax and take in the tropical sun. Thalassa is rented in its entirety only and can accommodate up to 14 guests. With ample space and staff to assist, Thalassa is perfect even for a wedding or family celebration.

Accommodation
Two bedrooms (includes the master bedroom) are located on the ground floor and open out to the gardens and the sea beyond. An additional four rooms are located on the upper floor and all open out to a wide terrace with sea views. Rooms do not have a/c but are equipped with overhead fans and large windows that let in the ocean breeze. The stylish ensuite bathrooms have h/w showers and are designed with polished cement infused with colour. Each room is individually designed and is furnished with double bed fitted with mosquito netting. There is also a day bed in the living room on the ground floor that can accommodate one guest.
Facilities
The ground floor consists of a spacious living room opening out to the garden; an a/c den and study room equipped with a TV, DVD, sound system, a library of books and movies; terrace dining area overlooking the swimming pool; fully equipped kitchen, laundry room and staff quarters. The extensive gardens are ideal for a game of cricket or just relaxing in a hammock. Cricket bat and balls; a volleyball net, footballs, pool toys, croquet and badminton racquets are available. The sea in front of the villa is ideal for swimming and snorkelling most of the year. Upon request a local Ayurvedic massage therapist or Matthew, an American Thai remedial therapist, can be organised. Thalassa has a team of staff including a cook who can prepare Sri Lankan and western dishes, a gardener, and housekeeper. Venture off into the village and do your own grocery shopping or relax and let the cook do it for you. Fresh seafood can be purchased directly from the local fisherman. Vegetables and groceries are available at the village market or the nearby grocery shop.
Excursions
Watersports including snorkelling, boogie boards, windsurfing, diving, boat trips and kayaking are available at the nearby Dickwella Village Resort. The south of Sri Lanka beyond Dondra is considered one of the best locations in the world for spotting Blue Whales, Sperm Whales and Spinner Dolphins. Whale and Dolphin spotting excursions are organised by Mirissa Water Sports from December to April. Mirissa Water Sports, based in the Mirissa Harbour is a charitable organisation helping to generate employment for the youth from the tsunami affected coastal areas. Visit Rakuwa, a small fishing village near Tangalle where a fascinating Marine Turtle Conservation project is helping to save this endangered species. Visit the ancient Mulkirigala temple or the Wewurukannala Temple with its massive 165ft high Buddha stature. Wildlife enthusiasts will enjoy an adventurous safari into Yala National Park which is one of the largest national parks in the island where elephant and leopard can be seen. The Bundala Bird Sanctuary with numerous varieties of endemic and migrant species is located about 45 minutes away. We also recommend a visit to the historic city of Galle and its 17th century Dutch Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
