Location
Old Bungalow is an old village home in tranquil gardens by the shimmering Indian Ocean that has been newly refurbished into a two-bedroom beach villa. This simple villa is conveniently located to experience the magnificent southern beaches, cultural heritage, and wildlife sanctuaries. The journey from Colombo’s international airport to Dickwella will take up to six hours so consider a night’s stop en route from the airport. The historic town of Galle is about one-and-a-half hours away.
Introduction
Old Bungalow has been thoughtfully renovated by British owners who have ensured that the original coral walls, red brick flooring and front façade has been retained. A new open sided `ambalama’ or pavilion has been added at the back which is used as living and dining areas opening out to the gardens and the sea beyond. This peaceful setting is ideal for couples or even artists and writers. Old Bungalow is not rented by the room, but on a villa-only basis.

Accommodation
Two ensuite bedrooms are situated at the front of the house facing the front gardens. Rooms are furnished with antique four poster beds fitted with mosquito netting. Overhead fans help to keep the rooms cool and comfortable. Ensuite bathrooms have h/w showers.
Facilities
The open-sided pavillion at the back of the house has a living area that flows into the dining area. Built-in seating with large colourful cushions, lounge chairs for relaxing, and a six-seater dining table completes this area. The kitchen is equipped with a fridge, cooker, crockery and cutlery. Guests are welcome to cook their own meals. If you are interested in tasting Sri Lankan rice and curries, the housekeeper will prepare the meals for you. Fresh seafood is purchased directly from the fishing boats as they come in with their daily catch. Vegetables and other groceries are purchased from the village market. A full-time guard ensures security. The beach frontage is picturesque and ideal for taking in the tropical sun. Safe swimming is possible a few minutes stroll down the beach during the season from November to March.
Excursions
Watersports including snorkelling, boogie boards, windsurfing, diving, boat trips and kayaking are available at the nearby Dickwella Village Resort. The south of Sri Lanka beyond Dondra is considered one of the best locations in the world for spotting Blue Whales, Sperm Whales and Spinner Dolphins. Whale and Dolphin spotting excursions are organised by Mirissa Water Sports and the Ceylon Fisheries Corporation from December to April. Visit Rakuwa, a small fishing village near Tangalle where a fascinating Marine Turtle Conservation project is helping to save this endangered species. Visit the ancient Mulkirigala temple or the Wewurukannala Temple with its massive 165ft high Buddha stature. A jeep safari to the Yala National Park with 400 sq. miles of jungle home to herds of elephants, sloth bear, deer, wild boar, monkeys, crocodiles, and a variety of bird species, is a great day’s excursion. We also recommend a visit to the historic city of Galle and its 17th century Dutch Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
