Thotalagala bungalow is set amidst the extensive Dambetenna Tea estate in Haputale, a beautiful small town 4500 ft. above sea level on the southern fringes of the hill-country. Haputale can be assessed by train from Nuwara Eliya. It is also a central point from which to get to Arugam Bay on the South East coast, and the south coast beaches. Uda Walawe National Park is 2.5 hrs from here. The journey from Colombo via Ratnapura will take up to five hours.
Introduction
This seven-bedroom planter’s bungalow is the original colonial style home of Sir Thomas Lipton who made Ceylon Tea world famous and planted the Dambatanne Tea estate. Thotalagala bungalow is situated in a beautiful corner of the hill country, an area renowned for its fresh air and stunning views across the southern plains. On a clear day even the Uda Walawe Reservoir and the Tissamaharama temple can be seen at a distance. Bungalow interiors are well maintained and have wooden floors and fireplaces that are lit on a cool night. Nature lovers will enjoy the surrounding gardens filled with numerous species of birds and butterflies, and frequently visited by barking deer, mongoose, porcupine and rabbits. Manager Udayakumar, a keen birdwatcher, is always at hand to take guests on guided walks. Thotalagala bungalow is rented as a whole and can accommodate up to 12 guests. This is an ideal holiday retreat for friends or families travelling together.

Accommodation
Of the seven spacious bedrooms, four are double rooms with attached bathrooms; there are another two rooms sharing one bathroom that can be used as a family room; and one single room. The bedrooms are comfortably furnished with double beds (some rooms have canopied four poster beds), and mosquito netting. Three rooms have fireplaces that are lit on a cool night. Blankets are also provided. The bathrooms have h/w showers, wash basin, and w/c and some also have bathtubs.
Facilities
A portrait of Sir Thomas Lipton takes pride of place in the cozy lounge with an old working fireplace, cable TV and DVD player, and home theater system. A separate `smoking room’ also with a fireplace, paneled walls and hardwood floors is ideal for evening cocktails. The dining room has a 12 seater table which is well laid out for meals. Food is offered on an ‘a la carte’ basis. Sri Lankan and western meals are prepared with fresh vegetables and herbs picked from their own gardens and meats purchased at the local market. BBQs are organized in a stone paved, wooded section of the garden. Breakfast and snacks are served in the front lawn amidst a riot of flowers and magnificent views across the Southern plains. Excursions
Venture off on a mountain trek or bird watching in the surrounding area of Haputale. Enjoy the tea experience with a walk through a tea plantation and a visit to Dambatenne Tea factory. Adisham - a Benedictine Monastery with centuries old stone buildings is another interesting excursion in Haputale. There are several picturesque waterfalls to be explored including Dunhinda, Diyaluma, and Bambarakanda. The small hill country town of Ella with the picturesque Ella gap, Ravana falls and ancient Dowa temple is about an hour north from here.

Nature treks and walks through the tea plantation and a visit to the Dambatenne Tea factory are possible. Located nearby is the Lipton Seat with spectacular views, Adisham - a Benedictine Monastery with centuries old stone buildings, several waterfalls including Dunhinda, Diyaluma and Ravana Ella. The Tangamalai bird sanctuary, home to numerous species of birds is also an interesting excursion for nature lovers.
