Location
Galaxy Lounge is a laid back, cabana-style guest house on the beach at Arugam Bay. Arugam Bay is rated as one of 10 best surf spots in the world and dedicated surfers return each year to experience the thrilling waves and the relatively secluded beaches. Keen surfers usually make the eight-hour journey on the A4 directly from Colombo to Arugam Bay, which is tiring but well worth the trip. Since Arugam Bay is easily assessable from other parts of the country including the southern highlands (Badulla, Ella, Haputale), central hills (Kandy), Buttala foothills (Uda Walawe, Yala, Tissa) and the South Coast, it can be easily included into a tour of Sri Lanka.
Introduction
Galaxy Lounge is a simple holiday retreat, with seven cabanas, at the secluded northern end of the bay, only a few minutes stroll from the all the surfing action and the full-moon and Saturday night parties on the bay at `Surf Point’. It offers comfortable accommodation in eco-friendly cabanas, some on stilts, and is set amidst a flowering gardenwith magnificent sea views. The Sri Lankan owner, Sri, has created a place of great relaxation. Galaxy Lounge is popular with couples and those wishing for a barefoot existence where nothing else matters but the sun, sea and total relaxation.

Accommodation
There are seven cabanas, two on stilts with direct sea views. The others are set further back and open out to the garden. The spacious cabanas are have timber walls, polished cemented floors, and clay-tiled roofs; bedrooms have twin or double beds fitted with mosquito netting; wooden elevated balconies are ideal for lounging; and an attached bathroom has open-air shower with water provided from the in-house freshwater aquifer. Fans and the ocean breeze keep the cabanas cool and airy. Red Dot recommends the two beach front cabanas on stilts which offer panoramic ocean views.
Facilities
An open-sided restaurant and lounge area furnished with hammocks and planters’ chairs, is close to the beach. Sri Lankan and Western cuisine is served, prepared with market-fresh vegetables and daily catches of seafood including prawns, crab and lobster. Galaxy Lounge is located a few minutes walk from the `Surf Point’ one of Arugam Bay’s popular surf points. Surf boards can be hired from the nearby surf shop that will also provide lessons for beginners. With so many surf points in the area, Galaxy Lounge offers `surf safaris’ where guests will be taken each morning in search of uncrowded surfing breaks and surf points.
Excursions
Listed as one of ten top surf spots in the world, Arugam Bay also known as AbaY, is a popular haunt for surfers especially during the peak season between July and August. There are several popular point breaks including Ullah Point, Pottuvil Point, Surf Point, Peanut Farm Point, and Crocodile Rock. `Surf Point’ that breaks at the headland in front of Arugam Bay is suitable for body surfing and beginners; Pottuvil Point situated on a deserted beach north of Arugam Bay is more suitable for experienced surfers; and Crocodile Rock, another challenging surf point, is located south of Arugam Bay. Waves of up to 5–6ft offer up to a 400 metre `ride’ and the relatively isolated beaches are a major attraction to surfers. Explore the nearby Pottuvil lagoon, home to monitor lizards, monkeys, and numerous species of birds. Trek through wilderness to the ruins of the Kudumbigala jungle monastery which dates back to the 2nd century BC with rock caves, inscriptions, and ruins of stone buildings. The spectacular views from the rock extend as far as Kataragama.
